After nearly 70 years, visiting Rinteln where I was born. All my life in my imagination it had always been a military hospital in a German industrial town. How wrong I was :giggle:

My first German posting to BMH Rinteln as a military Physiotherapist in 1978 - and bought our first motorhome (a Tabbert Merc) which we drove to Cyprus for the next posting in 1980!

As soon as I read 'Rinteln' I knew it rang a bell. I looked it up on the map and saw it is next to Minden.

So then it clicked: My Father was the Civil Engineer employed my MoD based in Minden and responsible for the military buildings in quite a large area around Minden including Hereford and Bielfeld, so when visiting I would probably have passed through Rinteln.

He had earlier worked for the British part of the Control Commission, based near Bonn at Bad Godesburg but moved to MoD in Minden in about 1951-2.

If you were born in a British Military hospital there in 1952 he may have been responsible for the infrastructure there.

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility on behalf of my father for any failures of the infrastructure which could have contributed to any sins brought on mankind by Sheddy o_O

I've looked back and it seems I took remarkably few photos. during 2022. Too busy enjoying myself I expect.

There was this one which is the sunset over Lago Maggiore from our pitch. Wonderful scenery but a site that needed some love. I think that is Mrs DDJC in the middle ground. Either that or I was leching at someone else.

Started in 2013
1st tour of 2022, two months traveling to and from a family wedding in Sunderland via east coast and back via welsh borders. My wife's favourite stop was Hickling broad and marshes where we took a RSPB boat tour of the area. Mine was eating chips at the Ocean Beach Pleasure Park and dipping my toes in the north sea on South Shields beach which brought back fond memories of childhood family holidays.

I think ours has to be Royal Windsor Horse Show, not so much for the show but for HM the Queens Platinum Jubilee celebrations which of course we will not get the chance to do again.

My best trip last year was a week away with our son. We went to Wolfsburg for a guided tour of the VW factory and museum followed by a visit to Belsen. On our way back we called at the military museum at Overloon in Holland.
We only had one week but managed to clock up 1700 miles and only stayed on a site for the first two nights.

Non-swimmer first time on a paddleboard, without a life-jacket?

I hope there was somebody close in a rescue boat.
Got the safety tie on her ankle (the board acts as a flotation aid) and it was only 2 ft deep & I was close by.

Caravanning since 1980, saw the light in 2020
At the beginning of February, standing up and taking my first steps, using a frame, since my diagnosis with CIDP. I had more or less resigned myself to a life in a wheelchair. Now I am able to walk up to a mile using sticks (on a good day)

Gosh what a year, how to chose a highlight
finally getting abroad again after covid? And meeting up with Trev and Lil bigtree in Portugal, know ?John loved the ride outs with Trev while I loved the lunchtimes with Lil
or Getting finally to Italy with friends after Covid and illness stopped us for 3 years and then getting to Bardolino to discover we were just in time for the wine festival.
0r was it our annual holidays with the grandkids
but no it was John, finally, 13 years after being told he had severe arthritis, getting his hip replaced a few weeks after saying he would take a cancellation. He's not back driving yet but come what may we will be away in that motorhome first chance we get. (Think though a ride on the KTM might come first)

We were touring but I had a job to complete so had to find somewhere to park up for 6 days, that would give me some quiet and keep Siân happy. This was it, parked next to a lake in Italy, great weather, very few people about. I took this picture from my 'Office Desk" under the awning Yes that is Siân, apart from an hourly dip, she laid on that pier for a whole week.

Followed by a fly-away trip to Croatia.

And, finally, having a substantial win on the Premium Bonds allowing us to plan other adventures as well as helping family with their expenses. For us it was a good year, except for having to cut a winter motorhome trip to France short due to contracting Shingles, (painful).

Mauritius swimming in the sea with about 80 Dolphins passing me by. Absolutely brilliant.
I took a video but it’s to big to paste. Ignoring the time and date stamp, I used a cheapo video camera from Home Bargains and didn’t set it up. The actual date was 13/09/22 at about 11am in the morning.

We went out on a boat with 2 Mauritian lads, my wife, 2 daughters, myself and a big (sorry) funny French guy. (He said if we didn’t see a dolphin at least we had seen a whale, and that was before we went out).

As it happens, we did see Whales, mum, baby and dad swimming behind. Absolutely brilliant day out.

I Hird about Thora.

[Was our neighbour at one time in Hove]
My daughter-in-law hadn't heard of Thora Hird when she chose the name but has since read quite a lot about her; apparently she was quite a formidable woman with many achievements, so she's really happy she chose the name. I work in our local doctor's surgery with nearly 14,000 patients and our Thora is the only patient with that name.
