Best Engine??

We have a Comformatic gearbox attached to a 3 litre 180hp engine pulling a 4.5t A class. No problems in the 28000 miles it has done so far. So much more relaxing than the manual I had before.

Its a motorhome Oh Please!, you are not going to use it to race people off the lights. :D2

I like racing mh from the lights but it's annoying when the pushbikes get away quicker and i cant catch up and overtake them - but then again i'm getting older and in no rush to get anywhere

A question, why do they produce both a 2.3ltr and a 3.0ltr when they both produce 180bhp.
Or are these 2 different engine manufacturers

The 2.3ltr 180hp replaced the 3ltr 180hp in about 2016. I have one of the last 3ltr engines fitted, which is a rebadged Iveco engine I am told.

Out of interest what did you have before?

@jongood sorry not been on. This is our first Motorhome but I have a lot of commercial vehicle experience and it is a good combination of engine and gearbox in my opinion. To be honest I didn’t know what to expect from it but I have been pleasantly surprised.

2.3 litre, 1500hp on a comfortmatic, 3500kg and we tow a 1400kg trailer.
Yes it's a servo manual and not an auto like our cars, but unlike an automatic car, you don't need your motorhome to be porsche-quick at changing gear.

I wouldn't have gears again. The Fiat comfortmatic works just fine for us. We were tempted by the 180hp, but the 150 is a very good engine. Its something to do with a better turbo I think. It pulls superbly and even on cruise control, can maintain speed, changing gear when required, going up some of those long dragging French hills. There is a little bit of speed tweaking that you have to decide on, in that our bus will repeatedly switch in and out of 5th and 6th at about 50 mph. Not sure Monsieur Le Gendarme will accept that as a reason for doing 60!

The 2.3 is an Iveco engine.

Our current van does that on long hills, last one didn't. We are pulling 500 kg more with this van, running around 4,100 kg. Strange thing is it only does it with cruise on, without cruise I can maintain constant speed and it keeps the same gear.

Peugeot 2.0 160bhp pulls like a train. Fully loaded Bailey 75-2 does about 30mpg and 27mpg towing a SMART on an A Frame. Who knows on longevity but Peugeot Panel Vans are not breaking down in huge numbers despite doing the colossal mileages white van men will have done already.
How many white van men do you know with the 160 bhp engine? Most white vans have the basic cheapest engine, very few 160's in daily use clocking up miles.
