I’ve had a look through old posts. I appreciate folk have differing views on BBQing, which models, gas or charcoal, and also recognise many cannot be bothered with the cleaning.

We have a Weber Q1200 and use it extensively. Previously it wasn’t too onerous to clean when on campsites, but now on aires or wild camping it is a bigger problem. Any views on how to clean in the absence of unlimited hot water and someone else’s sink?

On my charcoal Webber at home, I just give the grill bars a scrub with a brass wire brush to get the rough off and that's it. The chromed bars are black now, but in a good way, like a seasoned cast iron pan and I don't get food sticking to them.
Be careful if using Mr Muscle type cleaners on your Q1200, it has a lot of aluminium in its construction and caustic cleaners will eat into it.

We have a Weber q 1000 and use Cif bbq cleaner then wash with hot water from the van over a bucket or bowl as not to kill the grass easy 👍

Get the grill hot, scrub with a wire brush, then stick half a lemon on a fork and rub all over the grill. Sorted😉

not on a webber, but on all bbq's i have had, i try to burn off when i have finished, bit of soapy water over the surface and let it boil away and turn to steam. usually shifts most stuff, then when i use it again i let it burn off before use and use a wet cloth on it again.

cant beat a well seasoned bbq surface, bit like a wok really !

Thanks everyone!

You could always get a couple of Teflon liners to use over the grill. The food tastes just as good, and the liner wipes clean, leaving the grill spotless!!! Have to admit I haven’t tried this on my portable BBQ, but use them all the time on the gas one at home!

I was going to fork out another £30 odd quid for the grill plate on our Weber Q 1200, but noticed a fellow funster using his at a meet, and he suggested buying and cutting to size the teflon coated sheets instead. Just leave a gap each side for heat to permeate into the lid top oven area when lid is closed.
They also wipe clean and can be reused many times, got our a couple of weeks back from Amazon, not had a chance to use BBQ yet though.:(
PS: another great tip for "smoke flavoured chicken", get some tin foil, fold into an envelope shape, place moistened woodchips inside, open envelope slightly, place on burners/teflon sheet next to chicken, cook for 1.5 hours, basting as you go, job done.(y)

Tinfoil on base under charcoal to wrap up ash when finished
Grill left dirty until next time when it is placed above coals while coals get going and burn/lightly scrape residue off.
Leaves grill spotless ish.

I don't think I'd fancy the teflon sheet if people mean the plastic sheet you use on baking trays they will be ok up to a certain heat beyond that I wonder what chemicals arr likely to be in the food

The speciality sheets you can get for BBQs are stated to be resistant up to 500F, and I doubt that normal BBQs get up to that level! As for chemicals being released, perhaps we have a chemist member who might be able to speak to those!!!

PTFE does not have a great reputation, lots of information on the web some true some not., a wood fired Pizza oven gets that hot and why it only takes 90 seconds to cook a pizza

Dark Waters, if this film was all fake Du Pont would have sued big time.

My cast Iron Plate one, I use Ciff Oven cleaner on the hot plate and then hose off?. If it gets really crappy. I take the angle grinder with wire brush to it. (y)
