BBC Radio Abroad

Subscription? Didn’t know that was available. Though I feel the fact that I pay my broadcast licence in the UK should count for something.
My point is it ought to be available and if you have a TV licence it ought to be included. At the moment you just say that you have one.

The outside radio subscription fee will be £40 a year or $50 for non UK customers ,, BBC can now disable most VPNs in my experience and also now have a new piece of software that is downloaded in all UK smart TVs on the manufacturers system and freeview updates that can monitor the devices use ,, they claim is part of the UK audience figures system but its spyware for the BBC as well ... It cant be removed as its part of the systems update ,,, My Sharp and Sony Tvs at home have recently shown it as a warning ...very sneaky and not at all publicised ????

BBC have a little known anti piracy software team that make a lot of money for the BBC selling software to the big streaming players and sports owners to trace and beat VPNs

Presumably there is the option of paying for what you want to use! It's no different to paying for everything else that you buy from people who own it.

BBC sounds app/website will be geolocked to UK only from Spring this year.

"As part of this launch, the BBC will also be making BBC Sounds available exclusively to UK audiences and ending access to the service for international users beginning Spring 2025. UK users who go on holiday (outside the UK) for a short period of time will still be able to use the BBC Sounds app abroad."

An App called radio uk

I might not be understanding all this correctly but I can still listen to BBC Sounds on my laptop in France.

As a UK ‘customer’ paying for the broadcast licence, I’m not sure I’d like that extra fee for a second month of holiday!
Do you know where that info is published?

My understanding is there will be a "paid for" service aimed at the US market and that's the only one at the moment

It was mentioned in BBC radio programmes , ''you and yours'' a few weeks ago and also on ''Feedback '' both on radio 4 ,,,, it is being rolled out worldwide soon ... Yes USA is first and Europe probably mid 2026 ... But you and yours BBC manager in charge of the rollout who was interviewed said it will affect people worldwide before that as BBC tests the algorithms online ??? so some confusion ....Its only clear whats planned for USA the rest is vague ....

I am not sure. I know when I have been abroad using my iphone even with a VPN set to the UK (that worked for Iplayer) that sounds app knew I was not in the UK
Unfortunately iPhone has a gps in it so iPlayer knows where you are even with a vpn. Use a laptop and a vpn they don’t have a gps so iPlayer does not know where you are.

BBC can break almost all VPNs , even laptops on a foreign wifi ,,,they are very active and have a contract with developers to crack and track VPNs and also employ Capita to deploy it ... it will soon be used by the License enforcement team ... One of my ex colleagues is a IT project manager who used to work for BAE and now works on this project for Capita and BBC , he say BBC are selling the software to Netflix, Apple, Disney , etc

It would be ok if you could pay the licence fee as a monthly subscription service that you can opt into and out of … the whole thing needs overhauling.

I wouldn’t mind it being annual - but I would like it to be a subscription that works when I’m temporarily (but over 1 month) abroad

New arrangements start 21 July 2025. You have 3 days to go.

Oh that’s interesting - my VPN is a connection back to my home network. So bbc see me exactly like I am when viewing from my living room. Guess that’s why it works for me.

It was easy to set up with my Pepwave router. They give you the software you need at home for free.

I never had any luck with commercial VPN services they all get blocked so quickly and also not convinced they are “private”.

Relating to this issue - but off at a slight tangent, in East Anglia recently, I tried to get Channel 4 via the internet. No problems previoulsy, but this time I get a message saying "Only people in the UK can receive this channel".o_O

Excuse me?

I emailed C4 and got ths response:
You need to ensure your device clock is set to UK/Dublin Time.

If you are using a VPN you need to disable it.

Check your IP Address is a UK registered address.

Yes, no and yes.
Still can't get it now. Oh, well. Plenty of other channels.

Going back to the basic excuse for switching off the LW Droitwich transmitter that is " the valves are worn out"
How do the French manage to operate so many LW frequencies?
Perhaps they have a spare one?!

Is pepwave an expensive solution ???

Is pepwave an expensive solution ???
Unfortunately it is not cheap - a “Pepwave Max BR1 ENT LTA” is in the £600 region and you will need to add an antenna on the roof as well so. But it’s very good!

There are other ways to make your own VPN back to your house without needing a pepwave! There are much cheaper ways to do it. It just depends on how you would like to use the internet in the van.

If you want to get a laptop/phone connected to your home - one good free way is to use this software https://tailscale.com/

You leave a computer on at your home on with this software running. Then when travelling about you run the same software on your laptop/phone and you can connect back home.

It’s a bit technical but well worthwhile, completely private and free!
