Hi we are off to France soon in our Hymer, and I looked at taking a Halfords Battery Pack in case we get problems with a flat battery; it also has a USB plug and a compressor but its very heavy and £150. Wondered what more experienced people thought, is it overkill or sensible?

Slightly confused Jim- On your contribution above you quote Papajohn and then start by information about A & A Caravan Services-- Are A & A words to be taken with much salt? or is my senility worse than I remember it to be!!

In my opinion---- our battery master should prioritise the engine battery, but it puts it second so if we use the leisure batteries the engine battery will never benefit from the solar charge as it only charges when leisure batteries FULL-------- we watch the battery monitor and when we have spare power we use it, isn't that what the system is for???
I will wire direct from the solar controller to the engine battery ----------when I get around to it !!!!!!!!we carry our little Genny to get out of situations like OP has mentioned!!!!!

If you read the link in post #2 you will understand what Jim's talking about.
The author of that article is an incompetent idiot

In all my years in the motor trade the only issue I came across with jump starting was caused by people connecting leads incorrectly. Always drove around with a set of HD jump leads and 2 large jump packs. When i retired pretty well everything went. Bought a motorhome and started to worry what if battery goes flat should I get jump pack and or leads, just in case. Well I never did and 3 years later no problems, and I'm sure I'm not as cautious as many. Start with a good battery and keep it maintained, relax and enjoy yourselves.

A and A Caravan services. Some talk of this guy like he's some guru. He certainly is not... On another forum he made schoolboy errors when trying to lecture others about the "danger of inverters" :rolleyes:Similarly here, damning the battery master without really knowing what it was or how it worked. Anything the guy says about motorhomes really needs double checking.
I remember the inverter earth thread, he admitted to not knowing much about them in the end. I got sick of arguing with him and don't read his posts any more.

We have one of those small starter packs. Fits in a wee bag the size of one of those small electric screwdrivers. Used it on ours once and on several others with total success. Its also a usb charger and weighs very little.

In the past I've used the hab battery to put enough charge in the flat engine battery (takes about 20 minutes) to start the van.

More recently I've bought a powerbank of the kind recommended by Gromett. So far, only needed it to recharge my phone, but like a spare wheel you hope you won't be forced to use it.
