Ban on chemicals in cassette toilets

Ok...take a deep breath Lilac and just ask 'em all........whats a sog please? :lipssealed:

And wait for it.....

Article in the Hymer magazine saying it is now illegal to use additives in toilet cassette, so those of you visiting Germany who haven't got a SOG better get one fitted.
Bollocks to them, plenty of other places to go.

SOG shit outside gubins:LOL:

its a fan and pipe that pumps out the smell when you take a dump. very antisocial on campsites and rallies

Especially if you happen to be downwind or your hab door faces their SOG fan ..... we use Lidl bio, marvellous stuff and also works just as well as Thetford cassette cleaner when you use either no chemicals or Elsan/Thetford bog chemicals whilst on the road.

I just happened to have a bucket of water with bio detergent in as I'd just done some washing on an aire somewhere so said to Pete 'You may as well use this for the final rinse after you've emptied that' - fantastic the amount of err, shit that came off - just like the pukka expensive Thetford stuff does when you use it at home after long trips. So since then we've used it all the while instead of 'chemically' stuff.

Do you really think that some German official is going to stand over you whilst you empty the cassette to see what colour the contents are? o_O
You only get warders like that on a CC Site

Just use a bio friendly fluid, bio washing liquid or nothing at all.

Exact. Gave it a full seasons trial last year....BRILL!! And, it really does keep the inside of the cassette stain free. Will never use blue or green again. (y)(y)(y)(y)(y)(y)(y)(y)

I'm interested Holmes..........do you use it in the rinse water too? (opportunity to save £'s here and my Welsh antennae are bristling............ney twitching forcibly?)

I'm curious, what lidl bio is being used here and what quantity is used per cycle? Is this washing powder, tablets or something else?

SEconded, seems like a no brainer Rowley but need more info.

Just use a good squirt of washing up liquid or put one of the liquid clothes washing capsules in the cassette. Works very well and no horrible chemical smell like you get from the pink or blue liquid.

Thanks Kath, can you use it in the flush water.............M says I don't do the bomb aiming right so the flushing is very important. (to her)

Is yours a separate water tank for flushing the toilet? I don't know if you could use it in that. If the flush water comes from your main fresh water tank then NO as you would be blowing bubbles after drinking tea/coffee :roflmto:

It's a separate 'header' tank Kath. That's the important bit to M for the reason given, but the rinse like all the 'correct' products are expensive and apart from the Thetford Rinse smell v unpleasant.

I am sure that someone else will be along in a moment and can advise on the system.

The smell of the toilet chemicals reminds me of my childhood summer holidays and the good old Elsan in the tent next to the caravan:envy: The spiders in the tent scared me half to death and the smell of the chemicals further contributed to enforced constipation for the entire holiday :oops2:

I must be odd.. I actually like the Aquakem smell..

and after years of having a foul smelling 50 gal RV black tank to empty, a tiddly cassette with or without chemicals is a doddle to empty..

We don't use anything, empty every 2 days, surely the bio or the elsan liquid cannot break any solids down in that time anyway?

The purpose for adding Aqukem is primarily to kill nasty bacteria .. and make it smell less like $hit.. not break anything down per see, ..
as you say, 2 or 3 days wouldn't be long enough..

I doubt that adding bio washing liquid or any other washing product does anything except mask the odour. .. but happy to be educated otherwise.

Most people do not realize how dangerous exposure to raw sewage can be.. it's been discussed before and the risk was poo pooed (pun intended ) or deemed too small to worry about.. I chose not to take that risk.. however small. I like using the 'blue'

Below is a list of pathogens and allergens that fester in sewage waste. Each danger is accompanied by its symptom in an attempt to educate property owners on the potential dangers of contamination.

Not suggesting you find them in every toilet cassette .. but who knows...

Bacteria

Bacteria are usually single-celled, parasitic life forms microscopic in size. Most genera cause decay, fermentation and disease. Below is a list of common bacteria found in raw sewage.

Campylobacter jejuni
A microaerophilic bacteria known as one of, if not the most, common cause of gastroenteritis. Long-term effects include could arthritis and Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) if not treated immediately.
*Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system, causing ascending paralysis.
(Escherichia coli) E. coli
A Gram-negative bacterium commonly found in the lower intestine. Symptoms bloody diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting.
Salmonella
A Gram-negative bacterium known to survive without the need of a host. This makes salmonella one of the more threatening genera of bacteria in raw sewage. Sufferers could experience symptoms of gastroenteritis, typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever and other common ails of food poisoning.

Parasites

Cryptosporidium
A protozoan parasite which causes Cryptosporidiosis. “Crypto” causes severe diarrhea in people with healthy immune systems. Immune Deficient patients’ symptoms are far worse and often fatal.
Giardia
An anaerobic flagellated protozoan parasite that colonizes in the small intestines. Symptoms included acute gas, severe diarrhea, dehydration, vitamin malabsorption and chronic weight loss.
Roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides)
Parasite caused disease known as Ascariasis while blocking the intestinal track. Causes visceral damage, peritonitis and inflammation of the body. Malabsorption will degenerate into malnutrition and anorexia in the infected individual.
Tapeworm (Helmiths worm)
Tapeworm actually feeds on intestinal track. Risks include vitamin deficiencies, fatigue, weight loss and, in extreme cases, severe neurological damage (ie. Seizures)

Viruses

Adenoviruses
Cause respiratory infections like pneumonia, croup and bronchitis. Also known to cause severe eye infections.
HPV (human papillomavirus)
Normally knows as a sexually transmitted disease (STD), HPV can also infect humans when exposed to raw sewage. Along with wart growth, HPV is known to cause cervical, anal and genital cancer.
Norwalk Virus
Known to cause 90% of the world’s non-bacterial gastroenteritis outbreaks.
Rotavirus
This viral strain can cause severe diarrhea and high fevers.

Along with these health risks, it is important to understand that cross-contamination can occur if the affected area is not properly contained and ventilated.

Dont believe everything you read is gospel. It ain't.
Yeah I know, I was in a strop when I posted it ha ha. Heading for Germany in May, it just annoys me when they just please themselves such as the proposed toll charges on roads where tourists will pay but residents will have the tolls deducted from their equivalent of road tax. Totally against EU rules as its discriminatory. That make's my blood boil!

we use those blue or green toilet cistern tabs dissolved in warm water in a half gallon plastic container then ade to your flush water to what ever dilution you want

We were in the Hymer shop in Bad Waldsee on Friday. Blue and Green being sold in the shop!

Oxygen is needed to break down solids (see, i can be polite) and the washing powders release oxygen.....thats how the get clothes clean.
i dont think it does much for microbes and bacteria except kill em.
its recommended never to put washing machine water into a septic tank as it kills the useful bacteria....and on a small scale, a cassette is a septic tank.

I guess you have to weigh up the options...stinky bacteria or odourless oxygen to digest the crap.
