Baie De Somme Aire Break In

I totally agree , and there are some great ones especially in Sweden

Not necessarily dodgy, the break in was most alarming (no pun intended), however, I'm sure many, like myself, have had many satisfactory stops there. Caution and prevention needed though, same as anywhere else
If you were going to come out with puns, I was surprised you never used "Robin" Reliant

Sorry for the OP

Sorry to read that. Do you know how they got in to the vans?
No, don’t know how they got in as I know for a fact I shut and locked the door properly as I am very conscious of locking the doors and always get moaned at by my other half for always locking the van etc even when at home! They have used something in the lock on our habitation Hartle door and managed to turn it for it to open. No signs of forced entry whatsoever. They did the same to my mum and step fathers motorhome (front cab door) which was parked behind us and again no sign of forced entry. Our door was just pushed too and so was theirs, both broken locks. My mums van is a Carthago and ours is a Hymer. We have stayed here loads of times in the past so never felt unsafe but will most definitely be heading for the tunnel next time and stay on a site at our side.

Really sorry about the break in and hope nothing more is missing, how did they get in? because if it can be fixed easy DO NOT report it to your insurers as they will attach a non claim incident onto your details and you cannot remove it. That means if you shop around for quotes when renewing your insurance you will have to declare it as it will come up and they may refuse you.
That said Never!! ever !! use motorway aire stop overs, crooks are waiting for you.
No not reported it to our insurance and never would as I know how they work by trying to fleece you for as much as they can! My other half has changed the spindle now so all is good and back to normal. We have never had an issue in the past but will take this as a warning / lesson to not stay and head for home to get on a site next time.

It is for that reason that I bought the Elefant door guards that slip over the internal latches which prevents the doors from being opened even if the lock is broken, forced or a key used.

Really simple and very quick to use.

Actually England's vehicle crime rate is pretty poor

One question did neither you, or your parents not hear the motorhome alarm when the door was opened?

I have been broken into whist asleep on a motorway aire but continue to use them. The thieves are incredibly stealthy, which may lead to the gassing theories. In my case they took cash and a new phone (but left my expensive watch). Breaking a door lock to gain entry.
I know someone who was broken into on a motorway aire in the afternoon, so they operate at all times of the day not just at night. I suspect lorry drivers who rob just before getting back on the road (I was broken into Sunday/Monday night, when many have waited all Sunday with little else to do but seek out opportunities.) It may not be lorry drivers, of course, but many are from other lands and poorly paid...

I stop anywhere.lol
I am the same, however, usually travelling solo so it is not an issue (in the sense I'm not responsible for any one else's safety or valuables), realise anyone can occasionally have bad luck, however, have to weigh that up against using the van as I want to which includes covering long distances in a short time to get too and from my destination and catching a sleep in a motorway service station works just fine. Baie de Somme is one of the better ones and disappointed to hear other members have had problems here. The point about lorry drivers is interesting, never given that a second thought before, surely not (?), although guess that's what they said about the Y.R.

A nice sticker of a snarling pitbull on the hab door usually prevents any attempted break in

We have stopped on air's free camped off sit camped in the last 40 years tuging trailer tenting tenting motorhoming and any other form of out door accommodation without indecent of any significance.
i don't worry to much as we are poor now we might get lucky and they will leave summthing of value behind.
We don't have a growler alarm or any thing fancy just a very big dog bowl we leave on the dash bored or out side the van with water in it.
we don't even have a dog now but carry a lead sum poo bags as well all sort of random visual deterants most thieves are opportunist so wont have cased out the van
Do they have a dog don't they have a dog

Put a chain or strap across the front doors, so even if they pop the lock, they still cant open the doors.

Surely if you are alarmed and no valuables on display/in the cab, then anyone managing to enter the van is going to leave pretty quickly?

We always lock, alarm and steering lock overnight wherever we are.

It might seem overkill, but by the time I have finished fitting the birds-eye view system, we will have a total of 8* cameras around the van. The birds eye will be permanently powered and recording, with a secondary monitor in the bedroom so I can check what’s happening outside at night if I want to.

*4 x birds eye cameras, one LH mirror camera, one reversing, one permanent rearview, and one dash cam. I could rationalise some of them, but I probably won’t.

What about a massive pair of pants or kinickers with an oxo or some fruit and nut rubbed up and down the gusset and leave that on the dashboard(y)
This has been on before but I still love it .? ? ?

I use motorway Aires when travelling, and have done for years, as did, I would bet thousands of motorhomes, cars, cars and caravans, motorcyclists, lorry and truck drivers, last night, as there will equally be thousands of people using them, the intended purpose tonight! It is what they are for.

As I have post on MHFun (there is no other forum is there) before, if everyone that stayed in a motorway Aire posted and said "I stayed in a perfectly nice motorway aire last night and nothing happened, MHFun's pages would be clogged with non event posts!

And some are absolutely great by the way! View attachment 327207
Do you have a good alarm fitted? :D

Don’t forget to carry a ball and catching gloves as well, then you can say it’s for sport and recreational purposes.

We have an alarm but like you I leave a big dog bowl outside full of water with a heavy chain lead and a large chew bone. The thing is we have a medium size poodle bitch and when I say bitch I really mean it. Anyone coming too near us friend or foe is fair game to her and she doesn’t back off unless we tell her. She is far more protective than our Doberman was, a bit of a wolf in poodles’s clothing.

We were waiting for the ferry at Lake Annesy a while back when an Australian chap came over and loudly told me, “that’s no dog for a man” I hope he is fully recovered now. And wiser
