Hi everyone, help needed. We are parked up and hoolked on ehu got up yesterday bad egg smell. Thought about gas leak so put it off and opened windows. I decided to clean out drains just to make sure, left the van for about 10 min and when entering the van the smell was unbearable. I new this wasn't right so checked on here, a number of threads relating to battery. I unplugged ehu and left door abd every window open everything off and spent the night at daughters. Took battery to Halfords who said ok. Any help very much appreciated in layman's terms as not very technical. Thanks in advance

as i say the fault was the regulator, although fitted had not been connected in line between the panel and the sargent control unit.
It's easier to make this mistake than you might think. Some control units like the Sargent have a solar controller built-in, and you just connect the panels directly to the input labelled 'solar'. Others don't have a built-in controller, and you connect the solar controller output to the input, also labelled 'solar', on the control unit.:banghead:

Battery charger could be at fault and cooking the battery. Try disconnecting the charger and see if that’s the answer. We

Check your drain traps. If an s bend trap is not used regularly, it will dry out. Then there is a direct route for pongs to get back into the van from the grey tank. Just pour some water into the drain. ..simples!

have we definitely ruled out grey waste ?
If it was the first use for a while and the plug was in, so to speak, you could have swilled the contents about from last year.

If you have definitely ruled out, apologies
Before going to the expense of a new battery as has been suggested, try flushing all your tanks/pipes/taps with the very old fashioned Soda Chrystals (Sodium Carbonate Dehydrate). Cheap as chips and may do the trick. Buy from chemists, hardware or Saver stores.

Just want be picky, the smell is hydrogen disulphide (not single sulphide), H2S. Either from your battery or anaerobic digestion, i.e. bugs in your grey water, same thing as happens in swamps.
If you can smell it you are OK but at about 100ppm (parts per million) in air it overloads your nose so you stop smelling it. At 500ppm it kills you.

Wikipedia reports an incident of 2 deaths from H2S from a faulty battery in a Porsche.

I had a similar problem and it was my charger controller overcharging the batteries.
my control panel has a volts symbol that was flashing red and I was able to disconnect the charger and still run on hook up.
I had a re con controller fitted by apuljack engineering in Taunton. Highly recommend them they were so helpful and literally started work on my van within minutes of my arrival (having made prior arrangement to arrive a pre agreed time)
Unfortunately it probably means you will have to replace your leisure batteries if they have been boiling as they are likely to be damaged now.
Consider lithium if replacing any apuljack will set your charger to charge at 14.6v (lithium setting).
good luck

Sorry to sound simplystic but recently had the same problem, turned out I had 2 lead acid leisure batteries, one hiding under the passenger seat of my Autosleeper Stanton Mercedes Sprinter. When I when I trickle charged what I thought was the only leisure battery it cooked the 2nd battery I didn't know I had. Both batteries now replaced with an excellent Lithium, not cheap but worth it !!! Definitely a battery problem.
