Awning Heater Help

The only carbon neutral way to heat a tent is with wood.
Google "tipi stove"
There are several on the market.



We have used them for a number of years to camp mid winter, it will raise the temperature of a single skin tent from an ambient temperature of 0c degrees to about 18c degrees in about 30 minutes. (Cost is circa £150, but they cost nothing to run)

Once the stove gets going (and assuming you are using decent quality dry wood) there is no smoke.
As a by product you can make great welsh cakes on the flat surface and also dry out soaking socks!

FYI - We do keep a carbon monoxide alarm in the the tent when the stove is on. It has never gone off, ever.

We carry and regularly use the single cylinder gas heaters, very efficient and a cylinder will typically do a full evening, on very cold nights we use 2, heaters are fairly cheap to buy and cylinders can be picked up for about a £1 each

Also much fairer that ‘abusing’ site electrics IMO

Like David, we find the little portable gas the best option.
Ours cost 30 quid off eBay and provides adequate heat for those chilly evening chatting with friends under the awning.

I disagree with the use of electric heaters in awning but would also remind everyone that any solid or gas fueled heaters will produce Carbon Monoxide (CO) which in a confined area, sealed from draughts, would be deadly.

good point well made and well heard, my brother died of CO poisoning, I need no warning ?

due to my hereditary phobia we carry 3 x CO monitors and have one in the awning when the heater is lit

but TBH the amount of breeze we get through the awning we are at very little risk of harm due to CO, now alcohol poisoning, quite likely, hence the use of the extra monitor

If you have naked flame heating (wood burning stove, LPG or LNG gas etc.) then you MUST have a Carbon Monoxide alarm nearby.

Worst is charcoal.
NEVER put charcoal under cover
Not even under an awning/gazebo open on two sides
As the gasses can enter in via a door to and into an enclosed space such as a tent or motorhome

We use a 2kw oil filled radiator in the awning in winter, drying wet clothes and also for socialising. Have done for years.
Everyone has an opinion and everyones is valid, just choose the one that suits you!

Burning gas should not produce CO. If the flame is blue/white then it (like every fuel-burning appliance) is producing CO2.

Thanks Tony, and yes we have a recently fully tested and passed RCD, but I am always still carefull on site not to overdue the juice.

You want to do what I do.

any surplus electric each day I bottle it and use it when wild camping.

saves using the solar and then any left over I sell at car boot sales.
That helps with the diesel I use ?

Small world . The heater will be safe in the awning assuming your van is protected by its built-in RCD.

Have you seen what a Novice licence has access top nowadays ? !
If your call sign started 2E0, you have an intermediate licence ( what was a Novice.. And there are BIG differences in what you can use nowadays ! )
Use up to 50W, and access to ALL the HF, VHF and UHF bands ( canna find any info on microwave use at the moment.. was looking for it the other day for some one )

Close friend of mine ( G7LVA ) has just got his licence back after being QRT for 20 years... He has found a quad band radio for under £200 new !!

We've moved twice since then!
Wish I was back at thee old address because the drive was MASSIVE would be perfect for our motorhome an 2 cars and no need for shunting stuff and motorhome could be turned round on drive to always leave forwards.That was on a busy main road.
we now live on a quieter road in a much smaller bungalow due to downsizing, making a profit and buying both the kids a house each.
we now have a nice small bungalow, easy maintainable and lots of holidays.
Been planning this scenario fora while and now caravans all gone, we can start on the thing I always wanted........
