Just asked a auto electrician if he could fit a rear view camera but says it
is illegal to fit But would fit one if i purchased it then it would be my responserbilty

I leave my reversing camera on when driving but it is no substitute for the mirrors. Firstly being on the back it leaves big blind spots where bikes and smaller cars can disappear. Secondly the wide angle lens distorts the perspective at the edges of the image. I can’t see why properly designed and positioned cameras should be a problem but reversing cameras can have their limitations.

(2) In this regulation “television receiving apparatus” means any cathode ray tube carried on a vehicle and on which there can be displayed an image derived from a television broadcast, a recording or a camera or computer.
Cathode ray tube?? For those that don't know, it's the old-style TV/Monitor screen that was a deep glass bottle full of a vacuum (if you see what I mean). It had a triple electron gun that fired electrons (cathode rays) at the back of the screen through a fine mesh of holes. The modern 'Flat Screen' is not a Cathode Ray Tube, it is a backlit liquid crystal or LED screen. So no problem there.

Well I’m in big trouble then I’ve had Omni-View fitted which gives 360vision including ‘birds eye‘ view whilst driving 😱

Both my rear view cameras are permanently on when driving. One high level for distant things and one low level for near things. Both pretty useless tbh when the sun is shining anywhere near the head unit or rear view mirror mounted displays.

That looks like a very clever system designed to give full coverage, not just a simple reversing camera stuck on the back.

Great system ,costly ,but gives all round vision ,selectable view ie further back when reversing , constant 360 cam recording and the ability to use as 360 security cameras linked to remote monitoring 👍

My reversing camera is operated by a manual switch so I can decide when to have a rear view on the head unit screen.
The only problem with that is that it cuts out the film I am watching :pinocchio:

Next time you're on the motorway have a good look at the lorries you pass. On the new ones you will see what looks like tiny wing mirrors instead of the full size ones. They are cameras with screens in the cab. No mirrors at all.

Our van has two cameras on the back, one for reversing which is selected when engaging reverse gear, and one to show a "road view" the screen is where the mirror would be and comes on as soon as the ignition is turned on, what's more is that this is all standard equipment supplied with the van, a 2022 British built van!
Very much doubt its illegal.
Mine is the same.

Two cameras, one of which is the 'long view' with the option to leave it running when driving forward.
The 'short view' camera comes on automatically when reversing.
It's a German van, and as we know the Germans are way more strict about cameras and CCTV than anyone else
(Recording dash cams are illegal in Germany!)

Get yourself a proper auto-electrician, ideally one that knows how to wire up a motorhome

Driving a LHD with a long arm Ducato mirror is a recipe for disaster. Whilst in UK the mirror is folded in then observing the rear view camera which connects to my Android mobile wirelessly via the app.
Very cheap and easy to install. 12 volts and off you go.
Whilst on UK motorways the mirror is folded out but on A and B roads folded in. You will have a blind spot of course but in general you can see what queue of traffic you have generated behind you. I think my unofficial record is twenty due to nowhere to pull over.
The worse case scenario for LHD drivers is being alone hitting a diagonal approach leading on to a another road which has priority when you cant see anyone coming.

Even more to go wrong then. It’s getting too sophisticated 🤔

I use ours to keep an eye on the toad, but also as a rear view mirror, couldn’t do without it now.

I don’t understand the folded in bit. If you need the long arm to see behind you surely it should stay unfolded at all times.

There are different sorts of rear view cameras. Yours is designed for reversing when going slowly, and seeing as wide a view as possible. You can get rear view cameras that have a similar rear view to a normal mirror.

It used to be that they would only be on when in reverse however technology has moved on and vehicles are now fitted with cameras and not mirrors .many also have in addition to mirrors cameras that turn on if the vehicle indicates to turn left showing mirror blindspotbut the screen is blank when not required. Many of the new vehicles that have cameras fitted have the screens in a similar position visually to where you would look in mirrors.
As technology moves on so does advice

Very true but I see a difference between cameras that are designed for rear view use and ones designed for reversing.
