Just asked a auto electrician if he could fit a rear view camera but says it
is illegal to fit But would fit one if i purchased it then it would be my responserbilty

Is he confusing it with rear beeper that sound when reversing as they are only legal on commercial vehicles.

Even then a lot of screens fit over or in place of the rear view mirror, so no different to looking in a conventional mirror.

A lot of electric cars have reversing beepers now as otherwise they’re silent

I would have thought a 'permanant' rear view camera would be a bonus for mohos that dont have a window in the back wall

Our van has two cameras on the back, one for reversing which is selected when engaging reverse gear, and one to show a "road view" the screen is where the mirror would be and comes on as soon as the ignition is turned on, what's more is that this is all standard equipment supplied with the van, a 2022 British built van!
Very much doubt its illegal.

That's how I use mine. It's a Sony mini CCTV camera with a 10" monitor and is obviously on all the time as a rear view camera. In fact it's useless as a reversing camera - must get around to installing one :giggle: .

From construction and use regulations.

I think what he’s possibly saying…very badly…. is he doesn’t want to be liable for buying the camera. He‘s only prepared to guarantee his installation work

I have seen quite a few systems that are designed to only work when reverse gear engaged?
Never thought before if this was due to some regulation?
Mine is wired to be screen ON whenever I want it on and it shall remain that way!
Mine is an original equipment item fitted from new by Burstner. It does automatically operate when in reverse but you can switch it (through the Pioneer Audio/satnav unit) to be on while you drive. Never occurred to me that might be illegal? Surley it's no different to having a rear view mirror?

From regs re television screen…..not sure if it’s been updated recently but…..

109.—(1) No person shall drive, or cause or permit to be driven, a motor vehicle on a road, if the driver is in such a position as to be able to see, whether directly or by reflection, a television receiving apparatus or other cinematographic apparatus used to display anything other than information—

(a)about the state of the vehicle or its equipment;

(b)about the location of the vehicle and the road on which it is located;

(c)to assist the driver to see the road adjacent to the vehicle; or

(d)to assist the driver to reach his destination.

(2) In this regulation “television receiving apparatus” means any cathode ray tube carried on a vehicle and on which there can be displayed an image derived from a television broadcast, a recording or a camera or computer.

He's possibly heard about section 109 of the Construction and Use Regs which came into force a short while ago, and wrongly interpreted it. Its about screens drivers can see only displaying information necessary for driving, or summat like that. Anyone who uses Google Auto may have noticed a lot less apps coming up on it.
My 2023 Hyundai has reversing cameras that only activate with reverse gear. My previous 2021 MG HS had the same, plus front facing ones that came on in certain conditions.

Edit to add: Now Stoosal's been kind enough to post the Regs, I'd say section 109 (c) covers reversing cameras.

And surely the rear view cameras fitted to some trucks (& a very few MHs) in place of mirrors would be illegal if the auto electrician was right?

My lwb Ducato has one 👍 As for the camera being illegal I suspect he didn’t want the work

Surely the rear camera display screen is not a cathode ray tube?
