Hello all good people. Planning to go to Austria but all campsites we try are fully booked and we are really not fancy booking in advance for a night or 2. Is it risky going there without booking? I noticed there are not many places to stay apart from sites. Been to Norway last year and usually we could get places in all campsites we wanted by just turning up early on the day. Anyone done it in July in Austria. Thanks for advice

It's going to be pot luck, July in Austria is peak season. You may get lucky with cancellations or no shows.
As you say not a lot of aire options (althought I think there are a few ?) and Austria is so well planned, regimented and organised you'll soon upset someone if you park where you shouldn't.

Some good info here---------https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/salzburg-to-calais-throughnal.304844/
It's the Carinthia thread you may want to read as well.

We are just returning from 5 weeks in Carinthia ripping the backside out of the Kärnten card.

We stayed on 3 campsites from may 21st. We have had quite wet weather, however as soon as the sun was out campsites were full.

I don't fancy your chances in July if it is warm.

There are some Aires. Very few. 20 euros ish and gasthouses which may be your port of call or saving grace.

Blog 'Carinthia Throunal' https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/journals/blog/carinthia-throunal.342/

If you click the link there are 57 entries of where we went and how little we paid. 168 euros for nearly 1600 euros worth of entry fees.

And an absolute shed load of photos

Please can you tell me how this works and the advantages ?
A Kärnten card can be purchased for 1 2 or 5 weeks.
We chose 5 weeks for 84 euros. 1 week was about 70 euros.

A cable car ride would vary from 20 to 40 euros dependant where it was.
A swimming pool about 10 euros.
Boat rides about 20
Gorge walks 10.
Mainly uninteresting museums about 10.
Archery or rope courses about 30
Specific alpine toll touring roads about 20-30

If you get the one week card everything you do on their offers is free for one week after you use the card the first time.

For example the pyramidenkogel is 19 euros. That is a shocking price (imv) for a view. So we went up on a nice day and a cloudy day.

Reading the link above will give you our view (and the price and location and several photos) of each of the ones we did.

It should all make sense in the journal

Just for Germany ?
No this card is specific for the region of Carinthia in southern austria.

Volkermarket Klagenfurt and Millstat were our 3 addresses but travelling to each place would be a pain in a motorhome hence we took the motorbike this time.
Wouldn't be able to do a lot of them on an E bikes.

Toad or motorbike needed in my view

Here is one of the entries.

A 9 euros gorge. Because we did the other gorge across the valley we weren't that interested in this one. Ye Gods it was good.
We trebled up on things each day.

This is our 4th Gorge walk and they are all excellent. This one, however, comes equal top with the unpronounceable T gorge.
We weren't going to do this today as the cable car was our intention but a schoolgirl error made us do plan B.
It's only... https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/journals/ragga-gorge-kärnten-card.494/

We found that good Austrian campsites are fully booked by mid January for the main summer season.
The Germans and the Dutch know that you book 6-9 months in advance for the best pitches in the best sites.

We spoke to one lady with a beautiful site, who told us mid July to mid August you had to book at least 12 months in advance, but they took bookings upto 30 months in advance

I'm a newbie
We are thinking of going in September to the Austrian alps but don’t want to book in advance as we want to keep it flexible to suit find the best weather as we’ll be hiking in the mountains.

Will the campsites be fully booked in September too, from the 1st onwards? Not sure if that is considered peak season?

IMO you stand a reasonable chance of being ok ish.
Check for bank holidays as going by registration numbers people quite local go to the campsites when it's sunny so BH may be same thing and weekends.

I would have B and C plans at the ready (and an ACSI card)

Remember to cost in the taxes at at least 2.70 per day per person

Don’t go around the Villach area at that time, unless of course you want to be surrounded by 100,000 Harley Davidsons (usually first full week, but they do arrive early)👍👍👍
