You could suggest to your ham friend trying network radio. Yesterday in my car I listened to a three way net with hams from the Caribbean, South Africa and London. All with no external antenna at all.

If you think that's bad as a chat up line, many moons ago we were refurbishing a hotel in Tunbridge Wells and we had a Scottish labourer in his late teens who complained that he was having no luck picking up girls in the local night club.
He said that girls just walked away or slapped him in the face when he tried chatting them up. We asked him what his chat up technique was and he replied "the same as I do in Scotland, I say to them, You don't sweat much for a fat girl do you", and yes he reckoned he would get a pull in Scotland with that line.
