Arivideci Yarmouth

Just had fish and chips , sitting in, masks and disinfect things everywhere, you have to wait while they clean everything before you sit down, first time we have been inside, feels safer than the streets in Yarmouth .

Which chippy? No1?

Now that seems a little over the top, there are no serious crime problems there and a safe area for people to visit with very few serious crime or Covid cases.
It’s not my cup of tea but living in the neighbouring coastal town we are fully aware there are no safety issues in GtYarmouth and would be perfectly happy to wander Regents Rd or the sea front during the day and at night.

Never mind the streets of London ! It’s the streets of Yarmouth !!!!!

Little wrong with the streets of GtYarmouth that makes it any worse than any other town of its size.
Coastal resorts attract quite large numbers of visitors from across the country during the summer putting pressure on local resources.

Thanks for the tip, excellent choice, if you are heading for Yarmouth, I would change your plan :(
Did think about it, but clearly not now. 🥴 Only ever been once before on a river boat, but thought it would be nice to return as we are in the area. We are staying on a farm shop for tonight, then heading towards Southwold tomorrow. Enjoy the site. 👍🏻

It's all going to be one big knock-on effect though isn't it, no visitors are going to come so nothing is going to be done about it and it can only get worse.
One thing that hits you right in the eye, on the end of the pier they are still advertising the 2018 shows in big posters.
Nothing since:doh::doh::(
That's the problem. It was bad enough 50 years ago so if it has got worse it doesn't bear thinking about.

When I said safer I was meaning covid wise, I never saw any other behaviour that worried me , most of the ones to worry about were streached out on the seats or pavement with a can.
Can't see Yarmouth attract many visitors soon.

Please no one think , oh he's off again knocking something, as I'm not , it is a place I used love and it's just sad to see it's gone.
Another thing missing from before is the horse and carts, is this covid related, or have they gone for good.?

I think a lot of coastal towns suffer from low wages , unemployment, and lack of money. A few years back larger inland cities were renting run down b&b places to house their problem tenants etc who had drug or drink problems etc which are now the coastal towns problem, with out any money to do anything about it.

Unfortunately we get the homeless etc almost anywhere and GtY has its share coupled with the E European migrants which don’t help.
Regents Road and Marine Parade dont normally suffer from them, they’re normally around the market place but it’s not a place I would go for a holiday but many love to holiday here with the arcades , bars and fast food .
East Anglia has some lovely coastal resorts but GtY is the tatty one

That is not the case with considerable money being invested in re paving large areas of the sea front, a new hotel and extending of the pleasure beach rides, the boating canals have all been re built with the gardens re planted.
The Marina Centre pool and entertainment centre is now being re built and the market place is also about to be totally overhauled with a new large sheltered area.
In addition to this the historic Quayside area has recently already been totally overhauled.

There might be lots of new fishing boats after the end of the EU Fisheries agreement. ;)

Following your comment re mask earring, or otherwise....

We overheard two couples talking on the beach yesterday. One couple telling the other that they always give false information on the track and trace form in pubs as they don’t want to be quarantined in the event that some-one there later has a positive test. Great community spirit!!!

I wonder how many people do similar. As there is no requirement to show identification no-one can check what you have written down.
D Duck?. M Mouse?. Frequent visitors?.

My wife and myself were there in August ( Stayed at the C&MHC site ) and we loved it. If you compare it to Blackpool its not that bad ! I think every bucket & spade uk beach holiday destination is always a little rough around the edges. We were happy just to be away and as you can see it wasn't that busy.

If you are talking about Cromer they usually have posters from previous years shows on display to show people past events. 2019 show was great. There is no Christmas end of pier show 2020 owing to Covid 19 But a few smaller shows running from a Thursday to Sunday are planned with a limited audience of 100.

Well we are off in a bit heading for Cromer, hoping to find a pub or something for tonight.
Been coming to Yarmouth for fifty years off and on, kids used to love it but won't be back, very sad looking place now, shops closing, market almost gone, seagulls and pigeons is about all there is left, been good weather though , walked into town 3 days, camplife is another thing we probably won't do again unless it's just the only way of parking where we want to be.
As to corvid, it's been a real eye-opener, all the shops have signs use a mask , some folks do, some don't, but distancing is mostly ignored , but all the bars and cafes need you name and contact details but what they will do with them when we are back home I have no idea.
They keep details for 21days then destroy

No Yarmouth.

Never new Great Yarmouth had an end of pier show, only lived in Norfolk 41 years. and Cromer is allways advertised as the only end of the pier show remaining.

Could be.
There are a couple of local Facebook pages that often show old photos of the area including some of many many fishing boats moored to each other bringing in the Herring, was once a very busy fishing port but most at the moment is supporting drilling rigs and wind turbine installations.

Interesting thread... will see for myself next week.
Booked in at the CAMC Racecourse site.
Used to be taken for daytrips, as a child, by my Uncle & Aunt.
Then I worked a couple of summers at the Carlton Hotel.
Changes for sure - but where hasn't changed.

I went to secondary school in Yarmouth in the late 60s/early 70s and worked down past the pleasure beach from 1984 to 2000. My wife was brought up in the town. We have seen a gradual decline over the years from a busy family resort to a dumping ground for immigrants. The rise of cheap flights over the past decades to warmer climes was obviously a factor. Major shipping players have moved out because of the poor transport links to the rest of the country. They are still trying to get the Acle straight dualled across the marshes. I dont think that will happen in my lifetime
The council has done a lot of regeneration largely with EU money and the prom has certainly benefited from that. But the town centre has not fared well with major chains deserting it. I do not visit there often now although we only live 15 miles away.
But Yarmouth does have great beaches. As do a lot of smaller resorts up the coast towards Cromer. Lets hope that the "staycationers" this year will inject a bit of cash into the town.

Sad to hear what everyone is saying about Great Yarmouth. Had a couple of very happy summer holidays there in the 70's at Vauxhall Caravan Site

Not just immigrants though , lots of English.
Ssshhhhh it's all the immigrants fault don't try to change it. 😉

Every seaside resort I've visited in the UK is rundown and tatty now ...probably due to the folk that used to visit these places now going to benidorm etc instead ...it's just as tacky but usually warmer and probably cheaper

As did we and been back many times, and although a bit shabby never seen it like it is now , all the large shops gone, and the ally down to the boats that used to have small shops all the way is about derilict.
Can't see making it fancy on the front is going to do anything but put the final nail in the coffin for the old town.

It’s like Newquay in Cornwall - that’s a dump now.

Empty closed down shops are evident in almost every town/city across the uk and have been for some time, certainly not peculiar to GtYarmouth.
The lifeblood of this type of resort is tourism and provided the sea front and it’s entertainments beach and accommodation are maintained, which they are then people from across the uk will still holiday there.
Very busy there this morning and driving along the front saw no less than 15 Motorhomes and few parking spaces.

I find Aldeburgh and Southwold quite pleasant Wells by the Sea is also bearable but lots of trippers last time we called in. Gt Yarmouth has joined the ranks of Margate , Clacton , Eastchurch and Southend on Mud!
Holding camps for immigrants!
