Are SOG Toilets Legal ?

......So the principle of the SOG venting to the outside of the van isn't against the rules. The problem is that you need an additive in the tank / cassette, that fulfils the germicide bit and unless someone somewhere has proven that the natural aerobic bacterial process is sufficient to be that "efficient germicide" your going to have issues.

My understanding is that the contents of the cassette are not in there long enough to achieve a significant natural aerobic process, and that this is not part of the sales pitch for SOG systems.

I can see how septic tanks work, but they work over a considerable period.
Also, I seem to recall that the last one I had any dealings with took some time to “get up to speed” ie, it was simply a storage facility for some time, until the aerobic process got going.

I agree with you that they are not there long enough to work aerobically. And to work quickly they would need to be regularly agitated. But SOG still suggests that it will work that way, Link Removed.

There is a sticker on the outside bottom of the cassette that says SOG but I don’t see how anything can vent through the bottom.
If you have a C250/260 cassette turn it over (best to empty first!). There is a recessed slot on the bottom and at the end of it there is a domed bit sticking up (or down when the right way up) from the recess. Push that dome with your fingers and it will move upwards, thus releasing the seal and the top of the ventilation tube. If you have the Thetford vent system there is a corresponding "bump" on the cover of the charcoal filter in the base of the unit that the recess runs in when the cassette is slid in and the "bump" pushes the domed bit up when the cassette is fully in.

Following your link suggests...
“The underlying principle of SOG ventilation systems is the passing of oxygen over the surface of the waste, whether this is accelerated when the fan is in use or passively as pressure escapes from the cassette via the SOG piping system to the outside of your vehicle. This is the natural curing “oxidisation” process used by Sewerage Treatment plants.”

But a campervan isn’t a Sewage treatment plant.

I think I’ll continue to spend £30 per year max on a bio “chemical”

I agree, but we use bio washing liquid. We have the Thetford ventilation system and to my mind its main advantage is to blow the smell somewhere else :D

I’ve been to look to satisfy myself.
I see now that I can press in the plastic grid on the bottom and it releases something inside the cassette which presumably (I hope anyway) is at the top of a tube which is near the top of the cassette.
As you say, inserting the cassette into the compartment it runs over a corresponding bit of plastic that pushes it in.
So now my question is
How full is so full that I might get backwash down the tube ? :whistle:

Oh, and I must have dirt on my phone camera lens as I’m sure the cassette compartment looks cleaner than it does in the photos :pinocchio:

I was wondering about your first post too. I don’t disconnect my sog pipe.
Surely the cassette itself is sealed when the toilet blade is closed ?
I have to say, I don’t know quite where the inner end of my sog is. I can only see that the extraction pipe runs under the compartment base and then has a connection to the filter in the door of the compartment. This I undo only to allow removal of the cassette. I have no bung.
Ours is a Dometic loo and the SOG pipe plugs into the top of the cassette. You have to disconnect the pipe and plug the hole with a bung before emptying. :)

I'm sure if you look hard enough through the statute books there are 2 or 300 year old laws which have never been repealed.
'Thou shalt allow a herdsman to water his sheep from your bath on the 1st sunday in august' sort of thing.

Your vent goes to the top of the cassette inside so the only way to get liquid into the vent is if
Your cassette was filled above you slide, which is obviously impossible, so nothing to worry about,

We plan to order our MH with a SOG for the extra olfactory comfort, but it never occurred to us to dispense with using the chemicals. Killing germs is certainly a strong enough motivation, helping the decomposition of matters another one and avoiding to puke when emptying it the final one.

And really, in the budget of a trip, do the cost of the toilet chemicals really have a measurable impact?

Been using SOG for last eight years all I ever put in is bio washing liquid it keeps cassette clean and smell ok. And does not affect septic tank digestion.:)

Hi riverbankannie .... the internal head of the vent tube has a float on it... that's what you hear rattling that you made reference to in your earlier post.. so as the fluid rises in the tank or slops about while driving the float closes the top of the vent tube off...in theory you only get the vapour escaping down the vent tube... hope that explains it..
Ohh and you can pop a little plate on the top of the casette to see the float sealing mechanism... after a while it does pay to do that and clean it as you do get a build up of ..... well shit ...in that space.... as the float sealing isnt perfect and a bit splashing takes place...

Sogs are illegal if your parked next to me. I’d stuff old socks down the outlet ???

Not sure I understand this bit about the plate ??

Edit: I’ve had a think about it and now I understand you. Take off the sliding cover over the blade and open the blade and look in there ?

Thanks now I understand how the magic of our particular sog works.!

No smells providing the carbon filter is changed every year

Or indeed still legal in Chester to shoot a welshman on a sunday but only with a bow and arrow. That one should be encouraged, if only to hear a little bit less gloating about Grand Slams

Not sure you have grasped what I was saying about popping the plate to see and clean the float mechanism... so parked in front of a rather posh looking hotel while visiting jarlshof on Shetland ive removed my casette and photographed it ??.. it may help you understand my ramblings
Cheers.

You are correct, I didn’t. So I’ve been out again to look at mine and I can see that the plate you are referring to is hidden by the sink SOG sticker.
It looks like the sticker will be coming Off!

Only legal after 9 pm ?. Anyhow, we only travel to Chester to watch grown men weep in their beers when the English loose at Rugby ?
