Are parking lights required at night?

I've not checked our MH (mid-90s Ducato based Hymer), but an older BMW E46 we had allowed some weird witchcraft with the indicator stalk to illuminate just one side, and the two Subaru BPs we currently have (Outback & Legacy) both have a special switch atop the steering column.

So the answer is "no, you don't need lights when parking......"!
Provided that you comply with the conditions stated in the regulation I quoted!

Of course, there may be circumstances in which, although not legally required, you may feel it is safer to use them.

Same as my Peugeot 2005 Autocruise. Put key in ign. Turn opposite way, side lights come on and you remove key.

Yes, some work like that. X250 position lights should come on using the knurled ring on the lighting stalk with the ignition off. The ignition lock should be in the "Stop" position and the key removed. Move the knurled ring on the lighting stalk first to position 0 and then to either of the lights on positions. The lights on warning lamp should show in the instrument panel when the lamps are on.

X290s with obligatory DRLs only have an on/off light switch. In the off position with the ignition on, DRLs are illuminated, and in the on position the headlamps. With the ignition off and key removed, no lights in the off position and position lights illuminate if moved to the on position.

If you try switching them on with the ignition still on or before removing the key, you may not succeed.

My 2013 X250 Ducato works like that, except I don't need to remove the key, just turn it to the 'Off' position. Key to 'Off', light switch to 'Off', light switch back to 'On'. Works with the key in or out. My light switch only has two positions - on & off.

Off - no lights or DRL if key turned to 'On'.
On - Headlights if key is 'On'. No lights if key is 'Off', unless turned to 'On' after the key is turned to 'Off', when sidelights/position lights come on.

Yours has obligatory DRLs and works the same as the X290. The reason I said to make sure the key is removed in the X250 is that some versions have key detection which warns if you have left the key in the ignition. On the non-DRL versions where the light switch has to be moved between two settings to signal the operating logic to the body computer, that could interfere with its ability to recognise the setting that is being requested.

Similar situation with my old 54 reg Fiat Punto. Switch off ALL lights off.

Bloody hell, are they going to send all the "whinging pommes" back?. :D2:reel:
Oy!
I resemble that remark.

Update:-. Replacing Windshield wipers to-day. so thought I would take a close look. What it transpires is that on the Fiat. just below the key is a "push" button. IF you push it in you can turn the key backwards, In that position the side lights come on. And you can still remove the key and lock the vehicle. I`ve only had the thing 4 to 5 years!!. But then I have had no occasion to need the facility. BUT probably worth double checking on Ducato`s?.

The latest acquisition is the Rapido999M, Mercedes 3L-V6 Auto. But before that we had the Ducato 2.3 (X250). The Avtar is my Winnebago Adventurer which we had for over 5 years in the USA (based in Texas) But the Fiat I refer to is our "toad" 54reg Punto, which we "A" frame.

So now you know!.(y)

Mine has a button on the dash that shows a headlight with a big "P", which turns them on.Then again it is 30 years old.
