Yes tonka it was white and im not sure but if i remember rightly it was called something like a “seahawk”, i lived in doncaster and used to chat to drivers on the A1 we had regular chats its a shame it was illegal, mine was in the house not in a car,

I investigated CB before but drew a blank, the problem is the antenna I enquired at a few CB shops but all said the antenna had to be a certain size/ height which just doesn’t work on a already high A class.
we ended up with a couple of UV5R walkie talkies then up rated their small antenna they work well as hand heads with around 1/2 a mile normally but the terrain maters the best we have ever got is in a valley in Germany where we got around 3 miles.
My friend and I would like more range with something like a cab but I just can’t see how with out a big antenna looking a mess.

What about a rubber duck? Or a small loaded aerial 🤔

I contacted a couple of shops and actually visited one and when I looked at an antenna around 30cm tall they all said no and showed me around 60cm plus that would make most motorhomes over 4m high.

Is it legal to use a handheld mic whilst driving?
It was deliberately left out of the present legislation to avoid putting a lot of professional users in a compromised position
Basically the copied the rules that the USA use

My current home base set up . Needs a good dusting 😂View attachment 572043
Ahem..............

I am sure YOU have NEVER used that set up have you..... NO of course not.. In fact you have NO idea what it actually is, other than someone told you it might be one of those CB radio things

All licenced radio ops have a clause in the licencing conditions that more or less makes them govt snitches ! We are legally obliged to report illegal use of radio equipment to the DTI
Hence I know absolutely that picture is of some strange gear that you found in a skip and have never so much as turned on

If you mean the Baofeng uv5r they are illegal unless you have a amateur radio licence, they transmit on 2 metres & 70cms.

The rig isn’t powered up or on a selected frequency in the photo 👍🏻. I only use the amp within my license guidelines.

Please see my post above to Swifter
All a bit tongue in cheek but if you are using VHF or UHF for god sake do not get caught in Europe
Not only will they take the rig but also your liberty for a while
Illegal VHF and UHF activity is a massive no no as it can cause interference to emergency services and stop dead some older hospital equipment

Is it legal to use a handheld mic whilst driving?

Yes, but only when using certain frequencies. These definitely include standard business NFM radio frequencies. Not sure if they include CB.

As a suggestion if you want to take radio seriously contact the RSGB to find your nearest amateur radio club that run the Foundation Radio License course. With this certificate and your new callsign you can work the world from within the UK. To operate oversees in CEPT countries you will need a HAREC cert. plus a higher class of license.

My CB went in the bin a good few years ago. Mobile phones have largely replaced the need. When I had one I used a removable quarter wave whip mounted on the wing mirror. I found it good for convoy use and it gave a range up to about 6 miles. These days if I am travelling with others we use PMR sets which have nothing like the range of CB but if we lose each other and contact we revert to using mobile phones until back together again.
