Are all bench seats uncomfortable? Are there any PVCs without one?

Not just pvc's with seating issues.

I have a B524 A-class. This has a large garage which obviously means a compromise in the hab area. This compromise means you don't have the long 'sofa' that you usually see on B544's etc, you get a shorter L-shaped design which isn't long enough to chill out on.

It really bugs me to be honest. One of the things I like best about m/h travelling is lying down and reading a good book or looking out the window.

Being a solo traveller I am looking at maybe adapting the passenger seat or removing it altogether just to allow me to put a better sofa in.

As for cost? yes true if buying new PVCs can win, but s/h there is little difference

...I am prepared to make some compromises but some not, e.g. fixed bed and garage, having both not possible in a PVC.

Slightly surprised by a couple of points in your post.

Firstly concerning price - I thought PVCs are frequently MORE expensive than equivalent coachbuilt vans?

And reference PVCs not able to have both a fixed bed and a garage, seems very strange. Lots of continental designed vans have fixed beds with garages. Eg our Rapido V68, Dreamer D68, Globecar Campscout and Adria Twin to name a few of the popular ones, but there are plenty more. And then there are all the ones with a fixed transverse bed and garage too - way too many to list. Ours even has space for skis in the garage, with the fixed bed in situ.

So I'm somewhat puzzled by your observation?

My 5.99m Globecar 600L revolution has a full size longitudinal double rear bed and a garage large enough to take 3 bikes, an inflatable kayak and boxes of kit ;)

The dinette is passable - though i tend to sit in the captains chair and Mrs McG prefers to lounge in the bed reading books / doing sudoku ….

Yes we use captains chairs. Tim sometimes sits on dinette bench as a bit more sociable for dinner

Mrs McG sits in the dinette seat for meals … and the captains chairs for watching TV…
i had to work in the van for a bit as i was having some work done in the house, and the dinette table was a remarkably good home office setup…

We like our globe car summit prime. Fixed single beds over the storage space are easy to get in and out of. OH usually sits in the passenger seat swivelled round. If the drivers seat if half swivled , he can put his feet up. I usually sit on the bench seat, or sometimes on the bed with back against toilet wall (we sleep with heads to rear doors) which allows me to stretch out. Lighting is no problem as there are lights everywhere. We don’t have a tv so that’s not an issue.
Our previous van had two long single settees that were good for lounging, but had to be made into beds each night, and of course put away next morning. May be the globe car is slightly less comfortable in that regard but it’s advantages far out weigh any disadvantage.
But as others said we all have our own tastes and preferences.

When we were looking to downsize from our 7.5m A class to a 6.4m Ducato pvc, we specifically wanted to avoid the Euro dinette, (2 belted travel seats) that we had, as we didn’t find it very comfy for evening lounging. That ruled out all the continentals, (I asked on here for suggestions). We’ve now got a Wildax Constellation 3 with, I think, a unique layout. Large unobstructed front lounge, one long settee (variable base and backrest) and a single belted seat (ditto), that comes down flat.Totally unobstructed slide door. Altogether feels much bigger than it is. No regrets at all. Love it!

Both our Autosleeper Duetto and the Rienza bench backs can be upright or angled. I don’t think we have ever had to angle the seat backs.
Some upholstery in other vans and coach builds seemed very thin. They didn’t look very inviting for lounging. Used as bed bases they would have needed a good mattress topper.

Similar layout to our Murvi Morocco. Long bench settee opposite a totally unobstructed side door. Love it, and very comfortable.

Our ordered Rapido Dreamer Family Living Van is a 6.3 Ducato Based PVC on the 4250kg chassis which emulates many an A class, having a front drop down Double up front with a rear lounge that can be easily made up to a double if required. There are not many PVC's that have that front drop down front bed which maximises the entire usability of space in such a compact van. For those in the market it's worth a look.
