Apple Macbook Air

So to connect this to an external monitor you will need a Thunderbolt cable? No HDMI?

Will there be any issues connecting Android phones?
For the apple something like this

I had an opod and an Apple iPhone 2, which was a nightmare.

Recen I've started my guitar lessons and my tutor has an Apple Desktop and from what I can see uts very impressive.
Just wondering, plus I'm in Civentry on Wednes having my car serviced, I may have a play in PC world.
Given your previous history with Apple products make sure you check it out properly as it could be an expensive mistake if you don't take to it!

Is it the guitar software your tutor has that's making it look good or because it's on an Apple machine? If it's the software is there a Windows based version \ alternative that you could install on your existing (or new pc)?

No guitar software, just looking at the desktop, YouTube and the sheer speed of it..

Just replaced my 15" 2013/5 Mac with as new refurbished 15" Asus Chromebook - £100. Only 64Gb of disk capacity but stuck £24 256GB micro in slot so all good. Key documents are online/offline with free Google 15Gb and photos on Amazon. Will take the hard disk out the mac when happy I have everything working fully and use it as backup as well.
A replacement Apple charger through Amazon is £69 which only ever lasted 2 years and and a 3rd battery required as well. Chromebook - USB C charger so one less thing the inverter needed for and lasts 50% longer.
It does all I need it for and while some stuff obviously not quite as good - the cost saving is less than keeping my old computer functioning never mind replacing.

The concept of a Chomebook is all very well but why would you want to give all your stuff to google and I mean all of it, I do not use goggle docs, google maps for them to track my life im certainly not going to hand over my pictures and docs or business accounts

Here is the distopian view a company produces x or y and decides to have all thier data and processes hosted by one of these behemoth companies......they with green eyes see the business and how profitable it is, it would be so easy to duplicate and create a new business with enough difference and also use marketing tools to suggest where the buyer buys next from.

Apple thank you does a great job in Data privacy as far as it goes so do IBM, HP, BT Apple and Microsoft

If you're using Amazon, Google etc track and trace is the name of the game with stuff just being pushed to you to consume and they are not always the cheapest or best.

Having said this if you are happy with you Chrome book, Google, Amazon etc and the way data is tracked that's all good. Just sharing some thoughts ;)

Google thinks my name is Chinese and that I live in Vannes, France, neither of which are true. I turn maps data on when I travel and off when I am finished as required. I far it far easier to travel with up to date maps then any other sat nav.
Storing information online with either Apple or Google is no different. Are you suggesting Google scans all the information you hold on your Chromebook and why would Apple not do the same if they were allowed or are they not seen as a Behemoth?
You are far more likely to be hacked on a PC or Mac.
I think the vast majority of us are prepared to use Google and Amazon.

Get ready for a surprise!

To use IT you need to use other people's infrastructure, routers, switches , load balancers, email servers the list is exhaustive......

Unless you strongly encrypt at rest and in transit, your digital tattoo is out there.

Google, Apple, etc take the brunt of tracking persons, but they are the tip of the ice berg.

If you have real privacy concerns, don't use the Internet, or if you wish to mitigate the risk establish secure communications with all, prior to information leaving the source - and that's a tough gig to do and maintain....

If you want to go dark. Then for the most part you have to get off the grid. The trouble is, life is so easy with all this tech and most of us are happy to give up a lot of privacy, to receive a lot of benefits. Every ones milage will vary.

Your data held by Google, Amazon, Apple etc. is so precious to them that they are unlikely to give it away in its whole form. When they sell you, they only sell on small amounts that usually points to a number, not who you are. You will be aggregated and sold just as a random number.

Get ready for a surprise!

Of course apple collects data and you can turn the personalised add stuff off. The big difference is Apple goes the Extra mile and does not sell you or your data to 3rd parties

You may also remember the case where the police were trying to force apple to provide data on a criminals iPhone

In addition

Facebook says Apple iOS privacy change will result in $10 billion revenue hit this year

The art is to choose who are the companies who protect your data and do not sell it

Not by apple go and check them out they do not sell your data

Quite correct, it does appear Apple don't sell your data, but they sure do a lot with it themselves and they do share it. Enjoy the read of the Apple Privacy Policy

A little snippet for the Apple Privacy Policy:
Apple may share personal data with Apple-affiliated companies, service providers who act on our behalf, our partners, developers, and publishers, or others at your direction. Further, Apple does not share personal data with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

I understand this you can in settings choose to share with apple and the 3rd party app developer crash data or you can just choose apple or choose not to share

I don’t wish to be rude but logging technical issues for performance enhancement de personalising data is one thing but whe you look at the difference between. Apple and Facebook or Amazon you are talking a different game.

You can opt out of the apple marketing, I have and never get pushed products and services, you can choose what to opt out of

This is the important bit

‘Apple does not share personal data with third parties for their own marketing’ purposes.

If you think this statement is untrue sue them

‘Privacy is a fundamental human right. It’s also one of our core values. Which is why we design our products and services to protect it. That’s the kind of innovation we believe in.’

Tried the Apple at PC world, was I impressed? Not really, strange touch pad, it would take some getting used to.
Very expensive for what I expected.

I walked away.

Lol they are expensive because your paying for the software updates that people used to buy or not as the case may be.

Hope you find the right PC for you

I have loads of stuff, its just that I've never had an Apple and I was curious,

Upgrades, hmmm Windows is free. Apple may be very well written and some software may well be better than Windows, but they still use Microsoft Office..

Apparently part are still locked down , I found the same with my iphone2.

Absolutely after apple gave away thier OS MS followed which is a good thing and Bill Gates said the best software on windows was iTunes so I guess it’s complementary don’t for get apple has its own word processing, spreadsheet etc and of course the much loved garage band.

MS also have their own high end PC’s which cost similar to the apple devices as they say you pay your money and take your choice

Apple has its own software for Word processing, spreadsheets etc. Microsoft does an Apple version but you don’t have to use it!

You can get a copy of Libre Office (M$Office lookalike) for the MacBook. Had to tweak some Excel spreadsheet macros for compatibility but otherwise seamless.
