Hi we are thinking of starting a selfbuild in the new year, (when we have found a van).

In the meanwhile I thought it would be a good way to hone my "skills" by helping someone with theirs. I am OK with plumbing and electrics and general DIY round the house but never done anything in cars/vans.

I am retired so can fit in with your schedule, I wont be able to help every day but will if I have nothing else going on I may be able to.

We are looking to convert a 6m Docato/Boxer .

So if you in the Stockport Area and need a spare pair of hands or someone to brew up drop me a line.

The most useful idea I have to offer is to look at as many conversions that use the chassis you favour and discover what the professionals have done with electrics, gas and plumbing, Also which components they favour and how they have built in insulation. In MMM magazine there are many adverts from suppliers of self build components, cupboards and tanks like Cak for storing water in a variety of shapes to suit your needs. Have fun!

Selfbuild usually means a house !

You may get a more fruitful response if you tweak your heading,

good luck!

Hi there, how is your van project proceeding?

I am half way through converting a Transit Mk8 Jumbo in Wilmslow so if you would like a chat over a coffee let me know. I'm happy to share experiences and hard earned wisdoms (like what not to do!)

All the best, Mike

We were looking at 6m vans and we had decided that a brand new Toyota was the way to go when they are released later this year due to the 10 year warranty.
However we have just had 2 months in Sicily in our T5 and its changed our point of view. We are now actively looking for a 5.4m fiat ducato 2016 to 2019 to convert. Its a long story and i can bore you with it when we meet.
A plan of our propsed layout is below.

That looks rather original; I can see you've put some thought into that. Very interesting double use of space. I'll send you my details; I'm sure it would be good to motivate each other as we're so close.

Hi finally purchased our van from Merthyr Tydfil Auctions, needs some work, full service and cam belt and loads of bits of rust and paint on the bodywork although it seems generally sound.

We would appreciate your offer of a meet up and guidance of what pitfalls to avoid if you have a free moment.

enough to know i shouldnt touch things i know nothing about ....
Bearing in mind that I haven't ever built or attempted to build a camper (but have renovated enough properties to understand layouts). I have also watched more tube videos on different layouts, designs etc than most people ...

Could you get the toilet on an outside wall so that you could use a conventional Thetford type cassette toilet, to make it easier to empty?
I would also consider making the toilet area as a fold up wall, so the space above the toilet could be used whenever the toilet wasn't being used (worktop perhaps or even your induction hob could be set into the wall/worktop) and a tambour door arched across the shower and toilet area for when you want to use them.

C'mon County !!

After the turn of the century, in the clear blue skies over Edgeley ....

I scored at Edgeley Park in a cup final when I was 14!

Started self build December 2020, finished April 2022
Plan the layout using to scale graph paper and cut your appliances out so you can move them around on your van plan.

Think about how you want to use it. I have done a 6m boxer and fitted a fixed toilet in and it's being a must for us. We have used a separating toilet that's removable so you can have a shower with some floor space. The toilet is a game changer, urine is easy to dispose of and the brown stuff is bagged and disposable in any dog waste bins, it's makes day to day living so easy when compared to the black waste disposal trauma.

We have a T5 at the moment with a rock and roll bed so are used to a narrow bed and dont mind it as we have slimmed down quite a bit since we stopped working.
We have bought a separating/composting loo so emptying is easy wherever we have the shower room.

In our T5 we have only ever had more than 2 in the van a handful of times so made the decision to make it a 2 berth van, with regards van size we like to get off the beaten track and our last trip to Sicily convinced us to reduce our size from 6m to 5.4m and we came up with the layout below.
Looking forward to getting started on the conversion after we have got the mechanics and bodywork sorted.

As you say well done The County
