Anyone fitted an Air Horn to their van ?

would love one on my electric powerchair when am out and about as am often invisible, or so it appears from the amount of people who are so intent on their phones, they either do or nearly walk into me..

That reminds me of a time we were in That London and trying to negotiate Oxford Street, folk on their phones or in a hurry being oblivious to the northern lady in her power chair. Our lass must have taken out a dozen ankles. That was a good afternoon!😜

have only just seen this thread, I thought those air horns were banned but that was quite a few years ago but now presumably allowed?

I believe it was the air horns that played a melody like Colonel Bogey or mimicked an emergency vehicle that were banned.

Why would you want one.. my horn gets used once a year by my MoT Tester..
IMV horn blasters are a very inconsiderate and impatiently "look at me " sort of driver.
If a pedestrian "should"attempt to step out in front of you then your "weedy wet fart" is more than enough..
Or are you the sort who picks up your work mate at 5.30 in the morning, sitting outside his house with your big, sorry, small truckers twin horns waking up the whole street..👍
You would be surprised how many people have a hearing impairment so yup the louder the better 😃

Is there a portable version to get pedestrians and dog walkers coming towards me to give me enough pavement space to walk past them without having to walk in the road or into a hedge 🤬

I want to replace the weedy horn on my Citroen Relay, it sounds like a wet fart on a tuesday :giggler:
I am thinking small truckers twin horn but where is the existing one fitted as I cannot find it?
I've done that on many cars.

Just make sure the current draw of the compressor doesn't exceed the rating of the circuit running the existing horn.

The done thing is to use the existing circuit to (switch) a relay, which has a much heavier cable directly from the battery (positive) to it's output side, capable of handling the heavier load. You can just earth the return on a nearby chassis, eg screw.

Hope this helps.

Ever thought of a train horn, or are you happy with half measures? 👀😱😜

If you need a load horn then you need to look at your own driving
Oddly enough, I broke a few ribs just before covid (so I'd been 'staying at home' for two months just before we were told to!)

To keep myself occupied and with limited movement and strength, I built my first ever electronics project which was essentially a horn that could play recorded sound clips.

The thinking behind this was that 98.76% of the time I use my horn it's to gently 'nudge' someone who hasn't realised the lights have turned green and a full blast of the horn can convey a level of aggression that's greater than intended.

A cheerful 'toot toot' rather than a full on "GET A MOVE ON MAGOOO" is usually what I'm going for.

It's got ten different sounds you can play so you can have anything from the Ride of the Valkyries to your own voice saying 'The lights are green now' or whatever...

I did consider a full airhorn option as an 'afterthought' to an onboard compressor but it didn't quite make sense.

Not really horns are to let people know you're there just in case they haven't seen you. For example driving on a dual carriageway and people joining from the left who are bad drivers and don't realise it's them who should give way. You might be in their blind spot. You can't always move to the right hand lane to avoid them if someone is overtaking. A loud horn in that case is useful.

Sounding your horn won't change what they're doing, it will just annoy anybody living nearby. You need to be more aware at the on merge.

They can't see 44t of hgv but they can hear a beep beep 🤔
Not really! If they followed the highway code and filtered when space is available instead of expecting to be let join the carriageway then a little reinforcing toot or a deafening train horn type depending on severity of potentially causing an accident because they clearly havent learnt or been taught the correct way to join a live moving traffic lane!

As a retired Police Traffic officer I think I know when I may need to use a horn, it’s not to show anger it’s a warning instrument.

If you presume they haven't read the Highway Code and let them do their thing you won't need to use a horn to stress them further

Of course it does. The problem these days is a stream of cars joining too close. You can slow down but if they're all joining too close you have to get on the horn. I'm very aware on the merge thank you. If you've never come across these situations it must be lack of experience. People living nearby is irrelevant if a horn is required.

I've been in this exact situation hundreds of times and never needed to use the horn. Just adjust your speed and let the Nissans filter in and the Beemers get to the outside lane 🤷

A horn just causes confusion because drivers often don't know where, how or why it was sounded. By the time they figure it out (if they do) and realise what the beeps going on it's far too late to react.

You know best mate. My apologies.

Years of tutting all sorts if drivers and a family of traffic coppers teaches you all sorts

I do have memories of someone fitting a p&o class submarine fg horn to a mk4 cortina. He also painted it low sheen black as well. Happy days.
