I'm considering buying one of these (folding ) and would be grateful for any comments - good or bad

Quality, ease of use, after -sales and so on.

I previously had a Chinese E-Bike which was fine until it developed a fault and had to be returned to the seller as nobody else could fix it. I guess it would be the same here?

Yes we have two of the folding ones with 20inch wheels. Seem OK for the price, plenty of battery life and power.

Other half can't use hers now and I've just upgraded to a Giant e+1, so am putting the two we have up for sale.

I have a folding E bike which I have had for 5 years without any major issues. I bought the bike from A S Bikes of Coventry which is a family run firm with one of the best after sales service that I have ever found and I would recommend you speak to this company if you want a good quality bike from a straight speaking company that value their customers.

I take it these are for use when your abroad, or are they now legal to use in UK

E - bikes have been legal here for several years now, providing they comply with the regulations concerning maximum power and assisted speed (250w and 15.5mph respectively).

I'm not sure, but they may also be illegal elsewhere, and yes, abroad as we don't tour in the UK

Isn't it the issue of full throttle assistance that's the problem? I know that Wisper now submit each bike to ensure that they comply with regulations.

They are not allowed to have an independent throttle, the idea is that they provide 'assistance', i.e. you still have to pedal. Some have a 'walk mode' which will provide a very limited amount of power if you have to push the bike.

This is from Wisper's website:

Fully Certified, UK Legal Full Throttle Version Now Available.
Once we receive your order for a Wisper full throttle bike we arrange to have your bike tested by the DVSA and Type Approved as an L1e in the category 250W LPM (250Watt Low Powered) Moped. This can take between 2 and 8 weeks as the bike has to be taken to a specially approved MVSA centre for the Type Approval tests to be carried out. The tests are to make sure our standard eBike is safe and complies to current EAPC (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle) regulations. Once these tests have been completed we are presented with a British National Type Approval, Minister’s Approval Certificate bearing your bike’s frame number, this ensures the certificate can only be used in conjunction with your specific Wisper bike

Does that mean that they have to comply with the regs. for other types of moped, i.e. tax, insurance, registration etc.?

Still have some bankrupt bike stock my be worth looking at .I've had a few bits from them

I have just bought a non folding bike from Woosh, excellent service from them. It is a Gran Camino and has a thumb throttle allowing full speed of I think 14 mph, you have to pedal once for this to happen, legal apparently. My last bike from Halfords only allowed walking pace from its throttle.

I have a non folding bike from Whoosh. It is about 7 years old and has been fine. The battery is still going strong. I think mine is before all the new regulations came out as i can just use the throttle by itself.

We have 2 woosh e-bikes, ordinary not folding, and they have been great. 5 years old now, but they do what they are supposed to do. And good after sales service too.

I don't think so. From Wisper :

In essence, our bikes, when Type Approved, can be ridden legally on roads and private land within the UK at speeds of up to 15.5mph using just the throttle.

Yes and a driving licence and a helmet according to the GOV website

Other kinds of electric bike

Any electric bike that does not meet the EAPC rules is classed as a motorcycle or moped and needs to be registered and taxed. You’ll need a driving licence to ride one and you must wear a crash helmet.

I think that's why Wisper make such a big deal of getting Type Approval for each bike. Not sure about Whoosh 'though.

I've got an electric Woosh Galleo, absolutely love it and been totally reliable.

Unfortunately, they no longer do this model, I bought this secondhand nearly 4 year's ago.

Everyone that rides it always come back with a smile on their face
