Another Fiat airbag thread. What have i done!

There are a couple of fuses behind that panel for the mirrors.

My heated ones on the Exsis stopped working, couldn’t find the fuse anywhere.

What a stupid place to put a fuse. 🤬
Do you mean this sneaky pair?

I remembered you telling me that fuses were there. So what's the other one for?

Oh and there were some wires which were disconnected too, a brown pair and a blue pair. That'll be another thread unless yours were joined!

No idea I am afraid, I found them by accident after Travelworld’s esteemed £190 an hour mechanics chucked my ultrasonic alarm sensor behind the panel when changing the fuse.

I hope I never find out. :-)

That's shocking. I really hate paying anyone for having a go. A friends brakes have gone spongy on his Transit custom and they want £180 to diagnose the fault, but they can't guarantee it's what they say!

Bit of an update for you MES minds...
Bought MES and cables from Gendan. Fab service and the email about the packing is hilarious. If you know, you know!

Did a body scan to see which modules could be found (with the yellow lead connected). I got this error message

The existing proxy file was this

and the airbag ECU is now not showing. Airbag light out, but doesn't come on when the ignition is initially turned on.

And when I try to connect to the airbag ECU I get this
1727274826887.png

It seems as though the airbag ECU is not functioning at all. Is there a fuse?

I'm initially going to follow the battery disconnect procedure and then disconnect the airbag ECU, clean the contacts, refit and also make an additional earth for it, and test again.

It's a bit annoying as although a new ECU was fitted a few months ago, it was done by the previous owner, so there is no guarantee on the parts/work (although I did pay for it to be done as part of the deal!).

Any ideas before I send it to Northernautotech for analysis?

As always, thanks so much for your help

My airbag unit went just because I changed the radio….🤬
sorry to laugh!

You could ask the previous owner to complain that it has failed & that you will be bringing it back?
* or you make out you are the previous owner & tell them "your mate "will be returning it?

They can't walk away from a guarantee on the part.Maybe the labour but the part is under guarantee.

I had my airbag unit fail last week whilst we were away and it showed all the same faults yours is showing. Plugging in my diagnostic showed no communication and sending it away for repair showed it has failed completely. I think something had gone a bit iffy as our alarm kept going off, which it has never done before, and the battery voltage was absolutely fine.

I got a new ECU from here for £180 and was told it was a 2024 direct replacement for my 2019 1394332080 ECU. I went to a Fiat Specialist in Sittingbourne today to have it proxi alingned and had a really interesting and lengthy conversation with the technician about CrashData et al, and what can and can't, and should and shouldn't be done with respects to "repairs" and the issues which can occur with regards to configurations, even if the airbag light has been turned off.

Anyway, the unit I bought was confirmed as being a genuine Fiat part, programmed up perfectly with the alignment done and no configuration issues, so ended up really happy.

Bottom line I've taken away from this is there is zero chance I will be using CrashData for any works going forward, and that includes them removing data from your existing ECU and programming a new one, which the tech said should never be done without the ECU in the vehicle as it will not configure correctly, even though it will show as aligned and the airbag light extinguish.

Thanks for this information Ray-Vic Safety is something I don't want to compromise. Having come from 1990 VW T3's and LT's with very little crumple zones and np airbags, now I've got them I want them to work! It is frightening to think that is could be possible to reprogramme a unit incorrectly and only find out in the event of an accident and the airbags are deployed (or not). I'd heard on forums that NorthernAuto are a different breed to Crash Data (who seem to get a lot of bad press). Who did you send yours off to and what was the cost? I'm particularly concerned that my ECU is about 5 months old and has already failed. What if there is a problem in the camper which makes another fail!

Your part number and the cross references referred to on the ebay link are unfortunately different to mine. I have however, messaged them with my VIN and I'll see what price they come up with. So far I'm looking at just under £400, and then I'll do the proxi align.

Did you find out what was making your alarm play up?

Yes, I do understand that people seem to get a much better service and result from Northern Autotech but, following the chat I had, I'm not sure that, for me, "repair" is the right way to go should it happen again in the future (accepting that many have had good results and no ongoing issues).

I think, looking at the general cost of your unit via the part number, it looks like yours in a more expensive unit for some reason (probably because they can). The shop I got mine from seem very good (almost 200,000 mostly positive feedbacks) and were very quick to get back to me. They also sent out for delivery next day. Hopefully they get back to you with a good price.

The alarm is absolutely fine again. As I said, I think something may have had a wobbly which blew they ECU and made the alarm go off. Both things happened on the same day and we have since found a leak in the roof at the rear which is being sorted under warranty, so it's possible that water had got into something.

Hope you get it sorted as it's so frustrating! I was on a full panic having mine configured yesterday as I had an MOT booked for this morning (it passed) and we are away Saturday, so could have been a real issue if it hadn't configured properly.

They said that they didn't have that part number, and then searching ebay found one, on their page! £342 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/28570507...pid=5339023013&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1

Glad you're sorted. Wish me luck!

Ah that's a shame they didn't have that one. The link is actually a different supplier, but it does look like your one is a bit more expensive for some reason. It may do more stuff possibly?

Good luck with it, hope you're all back up and running soon!

Doh! I think I've gone ECU blind 🤣

Well someone has put a new one of your exact model on the classifieds. Older unit but should at least get you going?
Thank you so much for this. You're super keen!!!!

Just messaged him to buy :giggle:

Update to cleaning contacts and making an earth lead...

No difference. Off to find a new one!

UPDATE Fixed!!
So the wiring diagram showed F50, and my F50 was missing.
I thought it might have been rewired in the past and that's why there wasn't a fuse present.
Battery off, and checked the airbag ECU earth at pin 1 of the grey connector - all ok. Checked continuity between pin 2 grey connector and F50 - all good.
Battery back on, and checked 12v at pin 2 (ignition on) no 12v. Fitted 7.5A fuse and now 12v, showing that there was no alternative source of 12v (ignition on).
Battery back off, everything put back together.
Ran Mes DTC, and showing an airbag now connected.
Cleared all codes and did a proxi align.

Airbag lighting up as expected, as is the seatbelt light.
Can connect to airbag ecu directly and read off parameters.

Now, what happened to the fuse? I have no idea how/where it fell out... When I come to fit my lithium leisure batteries I'll be able to look better.
For now, a happy chappy. Let's hope I've not jinxed it by posting too soon...
