Angles Morts

Do you have to have them on your Motorhome when travelling in Europe.

Regards Martin

We stuck ours on with Froggy Tape, so they could easily be removed.

Not pretty, but it did the job!

We saw many +3.5 tonne French vans which didn’t them on though 🙄

I bought them but didn't stick them on. If questioned I'd have got them out but seems nobody is really bothered, least of all french motorhomers.
But I avoided any major cities, maybe different there ?

Got them but never used them on a 3650 van. The French don’t seem bothered at all unless very obviously a lot of tonnage.

Not necessary until…some fool cycles up your inside in a blind spot and you inadvertently turn into them and knock them off. Gendarmes arrive, ‘ how could the cyclist possibly know it was dangerous to cycle up the inside as you didn’t have warning stickers to tell them? Come with us to the guillotine’

That’s what we did last year, but one of us got anxious about it, so this year we put them on! Certainly there are a lot more with them this year than last - even some French vans!

Just seen a similar thread on another forum - poster saying his mate got pulled over on on road south of Rennes a couple of weeks ago, 4.2 tonne Knaus so not obviously over 3.5, no sticker, €80 on the spot fine. I know that’s very secondhand info, but it may suggest they’re starting to enforce it?

I have the magnetic ones for the front doors and a stick on one for the rear, a lot of UK vans had them on in France when I was there in september.

I have magnetic ones and put them on the cab doors when driving, then take them off when parked or not in France the rear one I have put in the clear pocket of bicycle cover .

It would still be your fault. Stickers or no stickers. If you had the stickers then it might reduce your prison sentence slightly.

I made the mistake of buying stick on ones. After 3 months, 2 of which were in high heat, they proved very difficult to get off and my attempts to clean the residue off has led to dull patches. I would advise some other method of application.

Ever since the French published the requirements for these 'Angles Morts' I have failed to see why the danger areas indicated by '!' marks are in the yellow areas to the sides of the vehicle.

The vehicle cannot move sideways into these areas, but the danger to cyclists is in the black areas where they can get trapped when the vehicle is turning a corner.

The only way a cyclist or other vehicle can be in danger from the side areas is if they drive straight into the vehicle.

The other illogicality is that the requirement to display is based on weight not length, so for MHs the same dimension vehicle can be under or over 3.5t and need or not need the stickers.

I am not surprised many French are ignoring the rules.

See a large German 4x4 towing a massive Adria caravan when on a site in Croatia, probably 14-15m long all in and with normal car mirrors on I cannot see how he had good visibility!!

I have magnetic ones for the doors. Stick on for the rear. Take them off at home.

Mine are still in the shop waiting to be purchased 😂
If a cyclist goes into me I’ll get my breathalyser kit out and check them out. Oh, that’s also in the shop.
If a cyclist goes into you, get them to read a number plate from 20.5mtrs. If they can read that then ask why they didn’t see a bloody big white box.

mine are in the drivers door pocket, just in case

was driving through Dijon last month on a fairly narrow road and noticed a cyclist behind the van. He kept to the rear and didnt even attempt to queeze up the side of the van. Noticed a couple of times when stationary at traffic lights, he steadied himself by holding onto the rear corner of the van.
But to be honest to the lad he made sure he was visible to me in my mirrors at all times. Couldn't fault him.

Hi Bessy, it's on my list to buy some of these before we head across the Channel in the New Year. I'm just trying to decide whether to go for the suction cup version from Reflecto online. Did you find they stayed on ok please? Did you remove them when you were parked up? Thanks in advance. 😊

Interesting as an observation many U.K. Motorhomes had them not many overseas had them on some tractor units had them on the Cab but missing on the trailer only the branded units seemed to have them on the vans and trailers. So it’s a mixed deployment.
