Amazon fire stick

The majority of people who really use a firestick will be surprised that some think there's no point if you've got a smart tv! ;)

I've got 2 firesticks. None of which we use now as the smart TV does it all. I will use one in the van though as that's not a smart TV.

I am in Spain at the moment.
Amazon won't sell me one from UK but I can have one from Spain.
1, are they the same?
2, can I remove unwanted preloaded apps.
3, OH likes to use a mouse can one be attached.
Thanks in advance.

Yes but there were no firesticks at one stage so people defaulted to a smart tv. The issue with smart tv's is their inability in the main, to be updated. Years ago we all had computers, now we have laptops, notebooks and mobile phones!

As for 'really' using a firestick - that's because some people don't have the tech savvy or contacts to help them. For those in that position i suggest they take a look at Troypoint.com and load the cinema app as a start point. The firestick can be used for so much more ....

Don't see how you could attach a mouse they're very easy to navigate around anyway. Maybe you can connect with Bluetooth never looked.

Hopefully not thread hijack, but any advice on side loading sky go on Firestick? Managed to download sky go ok but then wouldn’t load correctly - kept coming up with an error saying couldn’t load. Instructions online only covered loading the app on Firestick and also didn’t cover adding it to your sky go account. So assuming work to do there also.
Many thanks in advance.....

I used to be totally dedicated to fire stick as many threads on here would testify and updated many to receive Kodi and other stuff but since my son gave me his old Sony smart TV , I have chucked them out, can't understand why you can't get them to update, mines doing it all the time automatically, and it's a real old one.

I have Kodi on my firestick and works great in Europe with a VPN. I did not put it on the smart TV as I was worried about how secure Kodi was to viruses and hacking.

I think that the only problem with getting a Spanish fire stick is that you may not be able to use BBC iplayer. With our Firestick (bought in the U.K. and set up there) if you try and use foreign wifi e.g. from a Spanish campsite, BBC iplayer won't load. If using the UK sim used to set up in the U.K. there's no problem with BBC iplayer.
Yes, you can remove preloaded apps.
Don't know anything about connecting a mouse.

Will have a go thanks. Is vpn vital though? If using in the motorhome on mifi?

I bought a lead from ebay (7.95) that allows me to plug my iphone into the HDMI and USB slots and I then get all the usual channels anywhere in Europe and the UK

Thx Phil 748 ? - exactly same error message I got. Works ok on my windows 10 laptop so yes must be spat between the content providers.....

Cinema app needs a vpn!! Watching on limited data could lead to high data usage. Although sometimes uk tv wont work when using a vpn, some US/Canadian ones can be viewed.

You can connect a blue tooth mouse to a Fire stick
  • Go into Settings tab on you Fire TV or Stick and click “Controllers and Bluetooth Devices
  • Click “Other Bluetooth Devices” and then click “Add Bluetooth Devices”
  • Place your keyboard or mouse in pairing mode by pushing the button that activates this function.
  • The Amazon Fire TV Bluetooth tool will scan for Bluetooth devices and connect your Keyboard or mouse once it is detected.
How long are you going to be in Spain we are going to Spain for Half term week and will be in Mazarron if that help??

Hi all.
I have just seen an advert for Mucho TV?
Has anybody used this instead of a fire stick as I also am looking at one for TV in Europe?
Thanks
Brian

In my experience, a Fire Stick is often better than even an expensive 'Smart' TV. It's faster, receives more updates and often has a cache to prevent buffering on poor connections.

You can also download 'TV Player' which gives you access to channels 1-5 (plus some of the usual rubbish) which you can flick about on like a normal TV and the stream is also highly compressed on the free version - using much less data than watching TV 'live' via iPlayer for example.

We use this set-up with your 4G roof antenna connected to the E5577 MiFi. BRILLIANT.

Currently in Spain and working really well.

TV player also gives access to all BBC Channels, ITV Channels and UKTV Play Channels. We watch a fair bit of Drama, ITV3 and BBC4.

There are loads of programmes on BBC i-player that we haven't seen so we download to my phone and then mirror it onto the tv via the fire stick. This seems to use a lot less data than streaming.

Cheers for that back to Blighty in a couple of weeks, impatient to play with new toys.

If at all possible get one sent to someone in UK and get them to set it up for you then post it out to you in Spain after they have set it up.

Can you confirm it works with iPlayer etc.
The one I looked at says no copyrighted channels.

If downloading is using less data than streaming check that when streaming it is set to low definition.

Take a look at Android IPTV boxes, quite a few around. I purchased one of these recently and have been really impressed with it although I noticed the price has recently crept upwards, I would still say it is worth having, not tried it abroad yet.
Link Removed
I had a few silly technical questions to start with but I was amazed how quickly the vendor replied and addressed my issues.
I really am beginning to think that now mobile data has improved Satellite is a thing of the past.

Hi sky Q will not play on the fire stick, from what I have seen on Sky Q forums is its a spat between Amazon and SKY, no problem getting Virgin TV to GO to play, all I could get with sky was this

Sky Go 'Not working' on a Firestick (or any Smart TV for that matter) is not an accident - it is by design. The same way that it doesn't (or shouldn't) work when mirroring using a cable and they work quickly to close loopholes.

Sky Go, as the name suggests, is meant to be an add-on to your regular Sky package that lets you access your content from a mobile device or laptop on the go. To allow this to be used on a TV could undermine the whole Sky ecosystem as you could share your subscription to others like Netflix presently do deliberately (expect that to be pulled in the not too distant future). Sky want non-subscribers to use NowTV to access content, for example.

The Germans have managed to get around this by using Kodi, a media app that can be installed onto the Firestick into which further Sky Go app can be downloaded and added. While Kodi itself is a legitimate platform, the majority of what people do with is probably a 'grey area' to put it politely.

A word of warning if going down this rabbit hole - some IPTV boxes/apps can sometimes operate on a peer to peer basis where any content you download/watch is also shared with others on the internet to reduce the strain on a central distribution point. You can quickly find any data allowance used up as a result of this

The early Cello Smart TV's basically had the working of an android tablet inside and access to the Google Play store, unlike any mainstream Smart TV I've seen. This meant Sky Go app could be downloaded and run natively - but not on the current ones I don't believe as they have moved onto the NetGem TV platform.

Sorry Addie, but only if a P2P application has been installed will this happen. None of the IPTV apps can use P2P services. Many are direct link via MAC address or use M3U files only.
However if you have Kodi installed or buy a firestick or other andriod machine with Kodi installed for you (not recommended) then yes you are right with the correct knowledge a P2P installed app will (a) see what you have installed (b) share your content (c) use your data whilst it is plugged in (does not need to be on just have power and access to internet)

Kodi is free and powerful home theater software that’s becoming more popular by the day. People are installing Kodi on pretty much everything these days: Amazon Fire TV and TV Stick, Chromecast, Android TV Boxes, Nvidia Shield, Windows, Mac, Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, Roku, and Raspberry Pi. But don’t let the slick presentation fool you. Kodi has a few security and legal concerns users need to be aware of.

In the UK, vendors selling devices pre-loaded with third-party add-ons have been fined large amounts for selling “piracy boxes” that falsely claimed to be legal. Additionally, the chair of UK’s National Trading Standards stated that anyone selling or operating a Kodi box with pirated content is in breach of copyright laws. There have been no cases of the the police tracking down Kodi users for watching content on Exodus or Sanctuary, but there’s a first time for everything.

Your internet service provider might forward you threatening settlement letters from copyright trolls or choke your bandwidth. Those who insist on using these add-ons often utilize VPNs to hide their activity.

I personally do not recommend Kodi in any way and users should be aware when using Kodi if they not using a VPN service (hide your IP address and HIDE your activity) they can be tracked or worse still your service provider could remove your data or cut you off.

User beware.

John
