Hi,
When I say cabin, I mean the living area - is that correct?
My question is, taking a worst case scenario of 40+ degrees in the spanish sun, maybe leaving my dog in the motorhome whilst I’m off cycling or running or something, up to 3 hours...

Actually 2 questions really - firstly I’d assume I need aircon in cabin to survive a spanish summer - is that a reasonable assumption? With the dog I think I have to. What are your thoughts?

Secondly, someone showed me a motorhome on Saturday with cabin aircon and said it could run all day on the solar panel. Is that a reality? I imagine it depends on aircon power and solar panel rating - but is it feasible?

thanks

When I had a dog he was a family member and always came with us. It often meant him having to wait outside with one of the family (sometimes in inclement weather) but that's the commitment we took on when he joined us.
Effective air con requires a lot of energy, so EHU. Some sites offer shaded pitches, which will combat the greenhouse affect. A dog has its own cooling system but needs water and shade. Take it with you, it'll shorten their claws, but you may have to keep up!

You may have Eddie, but very few others will! To even suggest leaving a dog in the van in 40' temperatures and going out for 3 hours beggars belief in my book!

Yes you are probably right which is why I didn't suggest that. However, not all vans are built the same. For example, my Glass double glazing with a thermal coating gives great insulation, and the American Air Conditioning units are much more powerful than the majority of European ones, to such an extent that the inside of the camper can be too cold!

Given that Shadow (our dog) is monitored on a HD internal CCTV system with motion detection, and the temperature and mains supply (with back up incidentally) are also monitored I cannot see any reason to leave Shadow in the camper when when we have no alternative. We have spent the money to allow us to do so, safely.

I am not suggesting that everyone can or wants to, but I am making the point that blanket statements such as "Can't be done" are usually made by people that "Can't"

Frankly if it were 40' which we had last June in France, we would up stumps, start the engine for the Cab Air Con (for us) Start the 6Kw built in Generator for the roof Air Con (for Shadow) and bugger off somewhere cooler, which is exactly what we did last Summer.

And one of these when running.....

I’m sure your dog would prefer to be with you than stuck inside a hot motorhome on a nice day....

I cycle a lot and always, without exception take the dog with me. This is the one I use. Safe and strapped in. Assuming your dog is less than 15kg.

You're planning on running or cycling for 3 hours in the heat of the day???!!! You know what they say about mad dogs and Englishmen.... seriously, in hot countries in summer everyone does their running and cycling before breakfast or in the evening.

We use a Samsung 6410 Smart Cameta that has pan and tilt, motion activation and two way communication

We has wireless internet on the camper and it works faultlessly from that. I bought it last year, but I would probably opt for the Amazon Blink cameras today

We made a mains and temperature sensor, but you can easily buy them on line to suit.

to be honest our camper was supplied with three Maxx Power roof vents, an upgraded newer version of the Fantastic Fan that I have been a fan of and sold for twenty years, which being 12 volt is also helpful keeping our dogs cool
eddievanbitz Based on this I bought a Samsung 6410 (eBay under £70) that arrived a couple of days ago. It's probably the easiest IP device I've ever set up and the picture quality is excellent. I want it for the same reason as you - I have three dogs left in the motorhome on many occasions. I looked at the Blink but it doesn't follow movement which might be important if it was used at home. Thanks Eddie ?
