How big a problem is it?
Do you know how it happened? add an answer
More than one failure, same or different vehicles add them all.
I hope we will be able to answer some questions in recent threads
also hope it doesnt look too confusing

2013 Fiat X250 went tits up 2016 and was replaced with a new unit fitted by Fiat main dealer under warrenty from Elite Motorhomes . I think mine was down to low voltage due to being in storage, started van and light never went out. No more info as it was just replaced.

2015, repaired by Crash Data reporting “very high voltage 14.6”. Happened on startup on a stop after a run, first run out after winter layup. Batteries on charge during lay up with EHU and solar.

First failure was at two weeks old on 2016 van, replaced under warranty. Second failure in April 2020 on initial start up after being off road due to Lockdown. Battery kept charged during that time. Repaired by Crash data with the high voltage report.

2016 van, had problems with the van six months earlier with cab battery going flat, jumped it three or four times before fitting new battery and no airbag light came on. four weeks ago was out in the van for a few nights.....on start up one morning light stays on......crash data never gave a reason.

2014 no failure yet. There should be a no failure option so we can see if failure is inevitable or rare.
Totally agree, i was trying to do that but didn't/don't truly understand how to set up a poll.
I also screwed up by voting 2017 without a problem.

My 2020 Peugeot based van airbag light came on, for no reason next day I decided to pull the material flap up at the bottom of the passenger seat to see how dusty it was under there, I noticed a plug dangling that wasn't connected to anything put my hand further down the cavity found another plug connected them and no more airbag light, whew lucky or what. A google search later apparently its was in my case something to do with the seatbelt tensioner that throws up a airbag warning because it was disconnected.

2020 on our X250 after van battery went flat. Had to wait 3 weeks for one to arrive from Italy as none in UK.
We met a newbie last summer who’d had his fail on a Peugeot and after Crash Data failed to correct it found there were none anywhere in Europe. He’d spent a lot of hours on phone and internet before sourcing one on a crashed van in Poland.

X250. 2013. Failed last summer (coincidentally?) when the van was picked up for service by a local garage and driven away with the EHU plugged in. No damage to the EHU cable or the fittings at either end fortunately. Airbag ECU replaced by Fiat main dealer. Faulty unit picture below.

Too shy to mention but some!
2014 Murvi on a Fiat Ducatto owned just a year ecu replaced as non repairable, no battery issues, no reason, just driving back home and red light pops up to say hello! Didn’t affect driving but replaced as it’s an automatic MOT fail. Replacement cost covered by warranty supplied when purchased.

2016 Fiat 5k mileage no battery issues but happened not long after out of storage in March 21 and morning of MOT, had plugged in EHU regularly. Crashdata couldn’t fix. So this winter giving it a run once a week. Took me a lot of phone calls and three months to get a replacement via Fiat Milan as local Fiat dealer sat on their ar**. So another failure possibility is a niggle always at back of my mind as without airbag unit functioning not only is it an MOT failure it’s dangerous as your airbags will not inflate in an accident.

Would be interesting to have information on failure rates for Ducatos generally as I suspect those that are workhorses don’t have the same level of fails ? The capacitor shortage for airbag units and other car components is not expected to ease until later in 22 so certain airbag units may remain as rare as hens teeth never mind the cost. Maybe the results of this straw poll could be sent to Fiat for advice for example is regular engine start up or EHU hook up likely to ease the failure risk ? Both auto electricians I have spoken to saw little benefit in replacing start-up batteries for the sake of it.

For those Funsters who have had airbag ECU fail without the vehicle battery issue I have heard that (sometimes) the failure could be as a result of dampness \ condensation within the unit.

2016 Bessacarr -failed (warning light on dashboard ) in September 2021, been with dealers twice so far without success. Fiat are sending another part from Italy this week (hopefully) and have agreed to pay parts and labour. My fingers are crossed !
P.S. Fiat customer care have been very helpful even with a 6 year old van.

Our Cipro 85 Renault based, threw up a problem whenever I turned the Drivers seat round, Airbag light comes on along with engine warning light, found this to be the cable under the drivers seat pulling on the plug socket, new plug fitted, ensure room to move seat without stretching cable, fault cleared itself, lucky me.
But we do have an intermittent warning come up for the heater plugs, still working on that, all fuses and wiring checked, just waiting for the weather to warm up a bit so I can go outside and spend some time.

My 2d worth, based on the biggest cohort in the poll being the 2016/2017 X290s, is that the common factor is likely to be the age and condition of the starter battery.

That, and the lack of resilience of the airbag ECU to low or high voltage, which is a design fault.

Do these airbag warning lights show up as a fault on an OBD port reader?
Has anyone checked with an ODB reader.?

They show up on the Multiecuscan plugged into the obd port so cant see why they wont show on a decent obd reader. you may not be able to reset them without the Multiecuscan or other Fiat software
