Advice for our longest holiday yet.

I must admit I’ve never tried using my debit card at fuel stations and so on. Maybe it’s because there has always been fees and so i have just discounted it from foreign use. My. Apologies if I have been misleading.

Make sure you’ve got lpg adapters for each country.
I ended up in Portugal on a whim and then had to locate a portuguese adapter.
I always make sure I have extra cash for the tolls as some in Portugal only take portuguese credit cards multibanco

Thanks all for your contributions, my planning is simply limited to booking my passage to the near continent, and my goodness the ferry and tunnel companies aren’t assisting me with my budget, any which way this week is going to cost a chunk over a £100, it’s the most I’ve ever paid ! If the trip goes well I will collect Mrs Crazylegs NYE if not I’m sure a kindly relative will bail me out.

If you don’t want to get a credit card then many funsters recommend prepayment cards such as Revolut.

Thank's for that Annie , had a read of the thread , and managed to pick up a link which is now locked into computer's memory . I'll follow up on that in the new year . Gotta be honest , i didn't know about the bank's charge's , i used to have an mbna card when i went across before , but i got fed up with the charge's , so binned it summit like 8 year ago now , and started using cash and visa . I swore i would never have another mbna card after that , just so happen's , that's what the santander card is . Mbna have had more than enough money outta me .

You mention that the radio you are looking at has internet access.

I've been using mobile broadband since i brought my first laptop , never bothered to get a hard line fitted , as the service was so good . I've used a pay as you go dongle on 3 for about 10 year's . When i'm hooked up , it's normally a 4g connection though the minimum is 3 . It's quick , and at the time was just as cheap to use mobile as it was hard wire , so i simply never changed it . Give's me far more flexibility when i'm away , enabling me to check the weather at will , and a whole host of other thing's . For the last couple of year's , i've been logging in to fun , while i've been in norfolk . From what i've been reading , a lot of you guy's on here , when abroad are using it , well i use it all the time , now if i could just figure out how to keep the chrome book's battery fully charged . It just so happen's the radio will accept the same dongle . I was looking for an external mic for the hand's free phone function when it popped up , android 6.0 , quad core , 2 gig memory , 7" 1024x600 touch screen , got , wifi , reversing camera , dvr , and dab . Even got summit called tpms , for monitoring tyre pressure's , and an obd2 connection , but i don't need that . I like the idea of having everything in one place , instead of having screen's for this , and screen's for that , all over the place , and generally making the dash look too busy . Best of all when it's not in use the screen fold's away , and it become's a single din radio/cd player . I don't have a smart phone , i think the battery life suck's , and in my job , their just not durable enough anyway .

Not sure who that was aimed at , but one of the thing's the van is short of right now , is an underslung tank . Save's on the hassle of carrying different regulator's for different bottle's everywhere . I plan on fitting a tank late next year , but the adapter's are another issue that need's addressing .

Anyone really. One type of adapter for Portugal and a different one for Spain.just remembered I’ve got to locate a Spain one this week as I travel back through towards Salamanca. Definitely might need the heating on.

Personally , i would stay where you are , kid . Got up this morning to see more snow outside , and it look's like the wind's up as well , so it's probably cold out there . I'm not sure where you are , but i'll lay money the weather's better .

Thank's for the head's up though .

Yep defo would stay put . If i was ta move i think i would head further west , google tell's me , there's a couple of nice beaches over that way . I notice you come from up north , well it would certainly beat what their getting up there , ya can bet it's worst . I gotta feeling it's gonna be a cold wet winter this year .

Looks like you have it sorted. We don’t do anything differently on long trips to weekends away in Uk apart from the making sure have all documents.

A friend of mine and her sister flew to Vienna early December, partly to have a few days break, mostly to help her niece finish packing up from a year's study as part of the international baccalaureate programme. All the 'big stuff' had already been boxed up and was on its way back to England. Unknown to my friend, included in the shipping boxes was the young lady's Passport . . .

Fortunately pictures of everything and anything deemed 'important' were on her iPhone and iCloud account. As a result, it took the British Embassy less than half a day to provide her with documentation to travel.

Moral of this story - take pictures of EVERYTHING! Then take a backup. Have a wonderful trip - not envious, not remotely, not at all . . . :xlaugh:

Good point, I always have photos of passports, driving licences, bank cards, V5 etc emailed to myself so able to get at from any device, mine or third party’s.
