Taken the plunge and purchased our first motorhome on a Fiat Ducato base. This vehicle uses AdBlue, however this is totally alien to me, the only bit I know is there is a separate tank and filler (to the diesel). How often do I need to add it, how much to add, is there an advanced warning that the tank is getting low, how long does it last etc etc. So pretty much actually, all answers would be much appreciated

FYI

I topped my new van up with adblue the day after purchase. Took about 11 litres.

Fiat Ducato 2021 140hp Automatic

The warning light to top up has come on at 2,350 miles.

I will top up today and see how much it takes …. I was expecting many more miles before topping up.

Daniel.
So it took 10.5 litres in a 19 litre tank…. Well I couldn’t get any more in without spilling it and it make a mess of my paint !

Done a total of 9600 miles now. Last AdBlu fill up was at 8303 mls. Total input of the stuff to 8303 mls has been 29.5 litres (so around 290-300 miles per litre).

Warning light seems to come on and then I can get 10 litres in, so in theory I reckon that's over 5000 miles on a full tank of AdBlu (19 litres), and yet my first warning light comes on with around 9 litres remaining.

Skez thank for that info. Any advice on how to fill the tank from the bottles you can buy rather than the fuel station.
I found 5 litre bottles easier to use than 10, and as has been said the spouts barely push the spring open resulting in backwash!

Used a pump in France and it was a whole lot easier and cleaner. I shall seek them out in the UK from now on!

Best to decant to a one ltr jug and use the tube. Then you can buy in 10ltrs which is cheap say from Screwfix

Otter Spotter when you say tube, what do you actually mean, I’ve no knowledge of using adblue yet. Would I need to keep the jug solely for the adblue for future use
Usually if you buy a 10ltr container of Abdul, it comes with its own plastic tube. I have a jug just for Adblue.

My warning light came on, I did about 70 miles to get home, put 10 litres in but then the ‘you can’t start once you’ve switched off’ message came on. Ended up on a recovery truck to the dealers. 🤷‍♂️

Topping up every 1000 miles to make sure it doesn’t happen again.(y)

Just topped the adblue up after 1000 miles (Fiat Ducato 160bhp 2.3) the 1000 miles was 80% (UK) motorways and 20% local A/B roads.

The Fiat has a 19liter adblue tank and the top up took c.2.5 litres.

So to the math:
Caveat we all drive different and differing roads to consider; plus, we are a GlobeCar 3.5t (vs. A class, etc other models)

So my guesstimate is that an adblue tank for us should do c.7.6k miles.

Fiat allegedly claim on yellow warning you get c.380 miles and you get c.100 miles on red warning light.

As previously mentioned by gus-lopez , from new it’s like buying a printer - your ink cartridges will print two pages then you need to buy more ink.

We have some local UK journeys this week (including the Norfolk Motorhome Show) prior to heading home to Spain (c.1450 miles) - I’ll do another adblue fill when I get home and see what the maths says.

I hope this is helpful to some.
FYI - when we filled up at home (arriving in Spain) she took 6.5 litres...

So, my 'guestimate' (not taking into account driving styles, routes, weight and many more parameters) is c.230 miles p/litre (c.1500 miles / c.6.5 litres); hence, with a 19 litre tank that's c.4370 miles per tank of Adblue for our Fiat Ducato 160bhp 2.3 campervan

As the warning light comes on with only 5 litres left in the tank, I'm guessing it's a minimum top up every c.3220 - IMHO we'll top her up every c.2K miles to be sure.

Not very scientific; but, hopefully it helps some.
