Hitchin?

The HQ of a former employer of mine and otherwise somewhere I only know from an old limerick.

Here's the 'clean' version....

There was a young lady from Hitchin
Who was scratching herself in the kitchen
Her mother said "Rose, it's the crabs I suppose"
She said "yes, and the buggers are itching"

A turd of a town if ever there was one....
thats bolluxs, Hitchin is a fine market town

It was 20e for 12 litres at the pump on French toll road a couple of days ago. First time I have used a pump rather than container, and although not cheap on the toll road I was mad at myself for not using pump from day one. Will not be using containers again.

I wonder what the average annual consumption of adblue, in litres, is for an averagely used motorhome?

As a starter, my 2022 140ho 9 speed auto Ducato uses 10 litres every 2500 miles, which seems astonishingly high compared to my wife's last car which used 10 litres every 10,000 miles. Regardless, never seen it as a problem nor caused me any problems and now I know how easy and convenient the pump is to use, even less so. I do around 10k miles a year and drive around 65mph on the motorway, keep up with traffic flow elsewhere

Our current PVC is our first to use adblue. I've recorded every fill since new. We are averaging 283 miles per litre in a 140hp 2022 Ducato with a manual gearbox.

I am getting similar AdBlue consumption figures from my 2024 2.2 litre 9 speed auto van. The more diesel you use the more AdBlue is needed to remove the NOX, I am averaging just over 32 MPG.

Alright for some I'm only getting 24.5mpg.

I think yours is heavier, taller and has more horses. I am getting better MPG since changing from Compactline to Van and put it down to better aerodynamics.

Last van was running 500 to 600 kg heavier and bigger and I was getting 26mpg, must be the new lead boots. 🤣

Blimey Lenny, you're losing your touch, paying €1.20 for adblue, and only 24.5mpg? I getting 28 mpg from my 4.5t hymer!

You must have money to burn, 🤣

We are in Spain at present on a rally that started in January. People have been coming and going for the last three months. Over that period there have been a fair number of breakdowns either on route or here on site. Most of those breakdowns have been caused by crystals forming in the adblue. Turns out that cheap adblue can cause these crystals and many transport guys here say never buy supermarket or cheap adblue. More trouble than it is worth.

I do not use adblue, so don't shoot the messenger.

Makes you wonder when you see some have filled up with Add Blue at €0.30 lt when Repsol charge €1.20 lt, I think I'll stick to Repsol when in Spain.

I suspect those having problems either have stale adblue from their last trip to Spain or buy containers which have not been stored properly or have been sitting around for a while, I think all the pump adblue is the same and it will be fresher than something stuck in a container on a garage or shop forecourt in the sun.

Really? Hitchin is actually (mostly) a very nice small town!

not true unfortunately.

My car, relatively high mileage, regular use, adblue topped up from fresh supplies always. Still had serious multiple adblue issues.

my van, ran perfectly fine for first 2 years that I had it, adblue system topped up from fresh supply. While it has previously been low mileage, I added 7000 miles per year so a decent use. When not in use. Take it for a 40 to 50 mile run every two weeks. Have had adblue issues.

go on to most manufacturers forums you will find many issues with adblue.

the problems are so bad that I believe Italy have mandated the maufacturers have to sort the problems, at their expense. Peugeot have more or less accepted there is an issue with early tanks hence the contribution to replace them. The tank design apparently changed around 2020. They should replace all previous ones with the new ones at their expense. But wont.

whilst in some cases it may be poor storage and use by the driver. The number of issues with all manufacturers of both commercial and private vehicles suggest something more fundamental in the design of the systems overall.

if you don't get an issue, then you have been lucky.

Just topped up with deisel outside beni at 1.32euros litre. Adblue was advertised at 77cents .unmanned pumps. Just basic deisel. 95octane petrol and adblue. .nothing else. Multilingual machine and cards only.

I guess I only ever went there for work, therefore the industrial bit. The road in and area around it is pretty grim but I haven't been anywhere else.

Maybe I need to readjust my opinion (y)

Appreciate what you say, but I was referring to the post about cheap supermarket adblue, if you have to use it, I think fresh adblue supplied from tanks is best.

Grim, its in the industrial heartland of leafy Hertfordshire? Like all towns its has an industrial area of small factories, warehouses, but nothing that many would consider proper industrial? who did you work for, and why didn't you ever go into the town, even the spoons is a bit up market from the usual

spoons? upmarket?

I'll take your word for it!

Why didn't I ever go into town? Well, because I worked from home and only ever had to travel the hour into the office a handful of times a year. It was work so I would then have an hour drive back home and frankly was never inspired enough by what I'd seen on the way in to make me wonder if there was a part of town that wasn't run down, abandoned or grim.

From people's comments it does sound like that part does exist somewhere, just not on the commute I did.

Similarly, I saw the posh bit of Harlow yesterday. Absolutely lovely it is. Not like my client sites in the commercial part at all.

In a former job I would regularly travel to Paris and people were envious of me. The 4am start to go to the industrial areas of the city was a far cry from people's visions of me sat in the 7th Arrondisment sipping coffee and eating exquisite pastries by the banks of the Seine... It was more graffiti and burned out cars with corner shops with metal roller blinds where I went.

Perhaps I need to work with fancier clients :D
