A photo of the day thread

this little fellow just landed on the wall outside, taken through the glass so not as clear as I would like, but it is at least my photo of the day, it is also the only photo I have taken today :)

Not a particularly interesting photo in itself, but circle around the rock pool taking 25 overlapping still photos at two different heights (say shoulder height and knee height) plus a couple directly from above looking down, upload them to the free Autodesk 123D Catch app (or PC program), select a 'flight' path around the resulting 3D model, save it as a video file and what you get is this:

I've been having a bit of fun with this free package recently. It seems to work best with items quite small to no more than a few metres wide (rooms included), but failed totally when I tried to 3D model the entire beach where the rock pool was, despite an exhausting walk to get all the pictures from different heights on a hot day. No harm testing the limits though. It won't accept more than 70 images per model, and the external server that renders them can sometimes get busy and jam up. On other projects I've found around 40 images are enough.

Worth a play with if you've got the time.
