A new hazard on the road, pavement and trail

E bikes with twist grip acceleration are scary and, imo, can be dangerous.

An ebike that only moves if you're pedalling it, is pretty safe.

There are always some people that aren't fit to be let out anywhere, even on their own two feet. Some people have no spacial awareness and should stay indoors with their mobile phones or watching daytime TV.

I can assure you that certain bigger models can be tweaked to do about 20mph. I will point out the legal maximum on the road is currently 8mph and 4mph on a mobility scooter in the UK. The same does not apply in all countries, so they can be de-restricted using a programmer

It's the e scooters that are the worst offenders , its got so bad with all these Ebikes etc I modified my mobility scooter to deal with it

Have you got a mirror on your E bike Jim?
I haven’t got an eBike Jim. Cant see me getting one any time soon. When they overtake me, I don’t feel so bad and I like chasing them. When I overtake them it’s great. Let’s see how long my knee holds out. 😀

Try one. We were sceptical but haven't met anyone yet who tried one and didn't like it. We aim for ours to be ideal transport home from the brewery in Whitby!

We did some cycling on the Ille de Re this summer I think the biggest hazzard was the sheer number of bikes. We tried some e-bikes and liked them so much we bought a couple from decathlon.
We found exactly the same on Ile de Re, speaking to one of the locals they hate it. The biggest problem for me was people just stopping in the middle of the cycle track to admire the view and there were many more times the cycle compared to just a few years ago.

You don't know what your missing. It makes those big hills into little hills and cycling more pleasurable than huffing along, a long incline.
Long may your knees last whilst your enjoying pure pedal power. (y)

But the hills are my favourite bit. Beating a hill makes the freewheeling down the other side so much nicer.

Surprise one coming the other way and it's awful to watch as they waggle their bars and even though there is room for 4 riders to pass, they bang on their disk brakes end up in the hedge, or put their feet down while still travelling at 12 miles an hour! It's scary to see.

I get that when I’m on my wheelchair trike, 12ft wide and they scuttle over the other side or just stop and stare as I wiz past like I’ve got rabies’s or covid…🤣😂😎

It depends on the locals renting out bikes selling refreshments etc must be a pretty big local employer

On the site we’re currently on in Marseillan Plage most of the campers who aren’t French are Dutch. A lot of them have these ebikes which is a poor description of them. They’re more small-scale engineering concepts, probably weighing about the same as a Moto Guzzi V50. They drive them in the sit-up-and-beg manner and, if you’re unlucky enough to meet one coming towards you, you’d better watch out! They have so much momentum that the stopping or avoiding distance is the same as a small tanker at sea.
At some point, they’re going to have to introduce further speed limits methinks. 🪖

In our recent experience on this trip's tourist trails in Germany and Italy, we've been cycling around 20 miles a day. On our travels we've noticed a new dangerous phenomenon, it's not cars driving too close, even though there are still plenty of those plonkers, it's not all the little dogs on long leads, though they are still in abundance, and no, it's not carelessly discarded grey water turning roads into black-ice-rinks. It's none of those things.

It's people who can't ride a bike, buying an eBike, aiming it at a destination and heading off. They are so dangerous, yes to others, but mostly to themselves. We've seen a fair bit gravel rash and thankfully none of it ours. Mostly these people are well over retiring age.

They sit up and beg. They can't lean a bike so use the handlebars to turn like they might their car! They bomb along cycle tracks faster than they can think, chatting away with a mate. eBikes are great, but if you haven't ridden a bike in years, borrow a grandchild's normal push-bike and use that for a few weekends, before you go buy that powerful beast. Gravel rash is painful.🤕

Hi.
I lost Jennifer at Praia camp site, she should have met me in the restaurant on site, but had headed off to the one in town. Being as she is a bit forgetful,i thought she was lost " On site " and borrowed a wardens bike to search the site.Ridden a bike down through France, along the Spanish side of the Pyrenees to Caja, over the top and home............ Gets on bike....... WOBBLES off and nearly clouts the island, get LOOKS from other campers ( WRONG SIDE OF ROAD )
SO. It is a challenge if you have not ridden a bike for some while....
The GOOD bit...One of the staff had seen her charging off down the road outside the camp and she was
Repatriated................................. ( DOH !! ).... OR... (( LUCKY ME ))
