700Kg Overweight, is this a record?

On the day we set off for Scotland we had our van weighed at the Refuse Recycling Centre, free if he wrote it down on a slip of paper, or £35 for it to be printed out - we went for the paper slip.

We were fully loaded with a full tank of diesel, full water, 2 dogs with their gear as we were dropping off to kennels on our way. Both Mark and I had packed clothes for all eventualities in the weather (brought a lot of it back unworn!) and I'd also packed plenty of food, plus bottles of water.

We're registered at 3500kg and weighed in at 3140kg - 360kg to spare and pretty sure we'll have difficulty in going over that for any trip.

You obviously don't carry ebikes, fishing dinghies and related fishing equipment, and climbing gear!!!

We know we are just (under) borderline carrying such things if we have only half a tank of fuel, third of a tank of fresh water (no waste water) and a depleting gas allowance!

Of course we could go on an even more strict diet and go tee-total (so no associated mixers)!!!

That would make us lighter still!

Not our motorhome but a 3.5t luton, we were weighed at Ashford at the side of the M20 .... 4.5t gross, the boys in blue were not too impressed and gave us a lovely ticket, but being a rather nice chap along side that he gave us an exemption to continue to the Channel tunnel, we were not allow to deviate from a direct route, could not stop and were given a maximum speed. The chappie in blue at the Channel said "we were very lucky to meet his colleague as he personally would throw the book at us" says more about him me thinks. I'm sure there are those amongst you who think I should have been hung, drawn and quartered .... as soon as I have my angel wings, I will think so too. Cost us £500 in fines and a day off work to attend the court at Ashford and listen to an aging person tell me what a naughty boy I'd been.

You can often upgrade the rear axle to 2700 kg by fitting air suspension, new rims & tyres.
I'm considering it though it depends if we're going to keep the van or upgrade

I saw a tag axle mh, 8.5m rated at 3500 nd and rear suspension down on the bump stops.
Obviously seriously overweight.
We are within gvw except returning from Spain with 200litres of wine. Probably ok if we dumped the fresh Water, but then what could we drink

Shame that a section of the forum almost see it as a badge of honour to be over weight so much

Real shame
When you have 9 out of 10 refrigerated box vans here running at "3500kgs" & a tare of 3300kgs , knowing full well they aren't carrying 200kgs in a 12m3 box, you give up worrying about it.

Not a badge of honour at all, I make a mistake, I wrote about it in response to the op and to tell others what lies ahead for those who follow my footsteps. I repeat "when I too, have my angel wings, as you must have, I too, may, but probably wont, have your attitude. It is due to retorts such as yours that many others won't post of their errors and mistakes and the forum will be poorer for it.

Now, attempt to belittle me as much as you like .....I DON'T CARE.

Wow
I didn't quote you
i passed a general comment about some elements of the forum think it is ok to be over weight ( and by a dangerous amount)
If that caps fit, you put it on if you want
As for "attempting" to belittle you, I don't have time to help you do it yourself
Bye

800kg seems about the standard over for a 3500kg motorhome when it is use. That is why mine is 4200kgs the basic model at 3500kg would be EMPTY of everything with noting of anything fitted. It all adds up every tin and cabbage, let alone the two passengers when it is meant to be a four person model.

It is fair to say that since my wallet emptying experience, I am much more careful these days, but we are lucky, 1km from our house is a weighbridge and the owner is happy for us to use it freely, each sortie includes a pass to check.

I wonder where the rental market stands.........they happily rent out 4 berth or even 6 berth motorhomes to families and I wonder how much, if any at all, have they been upgraded from standard 3500, 3650, 3850 etc etc. I think I know the answer............ Combine that with lack of knowledge about payloads and weights from the average renter and you have a nice recipe for fines and points.

I imagine that the rental companies have a nice disclaimer hidden in their standard T&C's
I don't know for certain but rental companies don't seem too bothered. Did you see the Liverpool fans heading to the champions league final in what looked like a rental van. They featured in a news item on bbc, there were 6 of them. 4 strapped in and two just sat on a bench seat, with no seatbelts. I wonder if anyone gave them advice.

My spanish neighbours eldest often hires a motorhome .Recently he took mum & dad , His sister & her 2 kids, 9 &7, so 6 of them in a legally registered 5 berth motorhome.
