Hi all, as only have B1 licence can only drive up to 3500kg motorhome.
Need a 4 berth and would like an A class. However payloads are very small, if we leave off a spare wheel and awning this saves substantially on weight.
Who thinks this is sensible, or do we really need these extras?

Oddly enough I was just reading an old MMM mag (as you do when communing with nature) with stats for a MH they tested.

MTPLM 3500kg
Payload 3500 kg

Outstanding! A MH with secret built-in anti-gravity generator.

In my opinion, Lenny made the right suggestion. We have BE licenses, so also limited to 3500 kgs. However it is only us 2.

Went for a small motorhome (that's essential!) and forego awning, sat dish, solar panels and most of the heavy extras. No plan to carry bikes either and replacing the lead battery with a lithium one. All that cumulated saves quite a bit of weight, but I still wouldn't feel confortable doing that for 4 persons.

Just in case this could be helpful, if we find out we miss artificial shade and we stay somewhere for more than 2 days, we're thinking of something like that:

It only weighs 8 kgs, can stay while we drive away for a local tour or groceries, is up in 10 minutes, down in 15.

We have an awning fitted but only because the van (and the previous one) came with it. We have only used it 2 or 3 times and then I found I was constantly expecting the wind to get up and necessitate taking it down.

I would not be without a spare wheel anywhere - never used it but sods law says that if I did leave it at home then I would pick up a puncture in the dark, when it is raining and at least 5o miles form the nearest garage after and both our mobile phones (on different providers) would be out of coverage!

Careful with that. That's pure marketing. There is no common building method between Hymer and Etrusco besides using a Ducato and common suppliers for fridges, toilets, etc...

You could say the same of the other 14 manufacturers within the group. Hymer specifically built the production facility for them just as they did with Carado.

Careful if you carry a spare tyre, some insurance companies insist on a spare wheel to be covered for breakdown recovery. As for a 4 berth at 3.5T you are likely to be overweight. Weighed in my 7.0m burster at 3.4t without my better half and an empty fridge. All in all probably weighed dead on 3.5t by the time we left for the weekend. (San Miguel 7.5Kg for a pack of 10). This includes all the gear we would normally carry in the garage (two road bikes, sun loungers, chairs, BBQ, bike spares, track pump etc). Now you could trim this out a bit but not significantly in my view. A lot of vans have very little realistic payload to support more than two people and their equipment. No other way than to weigh in your van to check.
