30% increase in travel insurance!

What is the flex account is it a bit like Barkley card travel insurance? All thrown in
Bill
You pay £14.50 a month and you get world wide travel insurance breakdown cover for any vehicle you own or are travelling in and mobile phone insurance. If it’s a joint account it covers both account holders for no extra cost.

Won't be a joint account but certainly looking at it even for the brake down cover

We used to rely on the free one from HSBC but they don't cover if over 70 as we both now are.
Now have a civil service one through the nhs retirement fellowship. Max 65 days a trip but no limit on number of trips.
Could you expand on that please as we are both ex NHS employees

You need to join the NHS retirement fellowship and then details will be sent to you. There is a small annual subscription. Travel insurance is exceptional value but you must be under 75 when you first take it out but can renew indefinitely.
They keep costs down as everyone pays the same premium so no costs in assessing risks, they are also non-profit.

I've used Oktotravel for mother-in-law, 87 today with Asthma, COPD and high Blood Pressure ... £737 for 12 months cover for Europe and £211 for 3 weeks single trip. That was compared to four figure sums for the 12 months from other suppliers.

I think there comes a point in life where you have to make grown up decisions' this comes to mind.

“I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?”

The policy says:-

... the standard number of days per trip is 31 but this can usually be extended to 45 or 60 days per trip for an additional premium.

Two adults.

It doesn't say anything about maximum number of trips. We have just done two weeks in Madeira and we have a week booked to Spain in February - so not an excessive amount of holidays so far.
Just had a quote and a read of the policy info, it states the below regarding health with a fair few restrictions and that it does NOT cover existing conditions and just as importantly anything that you may not have now but could be 'indirectly' related to an existing condition too, so basically a 'sod off' clause to a claimant. So if you have an issue with an existing health condition when away or what they claim is indirectly related to an existing condition, then what do you do?

My wife and I don't have any existing conditions. That's obviously why the cost is so reasonable.

So no medical treatment, meds etc at all in the last 2 years (excluding covid jabs)?

I'd have thought that's pretty standard why would they take a risk covering someone who has a need for help linked to a pre existing condition?

Because they usually do, you have to declare them when taking out travel insurance and pay and extra premium sometimes so they do cover you, as it shows with the above policy extract it's not just the actual existing condition, its the risk of another condition caused by the first one.

So my original question was just whether people thought a 30% increase in premium was justified? I realise some things have become more expensive in the last year, but it feels like 30% is just taking the mick.

No. Just Covid and flu jabs. Without any existing conditions we don't need any medication. I guess we are lucky but we also eat very healthily and as a postie (recently retired) I've always had loads of exercise.

Ooooo ... forgot about you! 😁

It depends on what's changed, ie have you gone up into another age bracket, had treatment etc in the last 2 years (including new meds), many things can change the premium. It also depends on how many days you want too as I've discovered that many are no longer doing more than 31 days so those that are still doing so have less competition and the prices tend to be higher (not literally).

We have 90 days with LV with medical conditions (nothing major), 59 and 64 years old, which came in at £168 for 12 months when I took it out in March. I've previously done a quick quote for future reference and it came out at £178 so not a massive increase hopefully when we need it. To put this in context if I had gone for a 60 day policy with someone else it would have cost a fair bit MORE than with LV, mad I know, but true.

I started a thread earlier this month as we've been considering Nationwide bank cover which may be of interest to you.

Well, thanks a lot! 😏

Absolutely nothing has changed from our end. That's why I'm so annoyed. And I'm getting to the stage where I'm going to dump LV. I wondered if I might be better with single trip insurance taken out just before each trip, as opposed to the annual multi-trip that we have now. So, I did an online quote, all the same details but for one 90 day trip rather than the unlimited trips of up to 90 days that we have now. The premium was more than double the annual multi-trip quote. 🙄 You figure that out.....

You mean you haven't got a year older! Respect!!! :notworthy2:

Seriously though, I don't understand the single trip costs either.

Sure, it bounces around. You take an average of some sort. The pound/euro exchange rate is currently almost exactly what it was a year ago.
True, but there has been a 7% fluctuation in that time, and what you dont know is what the rate will be when the bill from the hospital arrives months later.

Truss could the Chancellor by then !
Which means that bill could be the same is Euro's but 25% more in Pounds !

Basically standard 'London Rules' (Cover your arse)

I suspect Truss will never hold another ministerial position. 😆. The pound/ euro rate has bounced up and down for the last few years. Basing insurance premiums on that is a feeble ploy.

Ours went up this year by £20. Nothing like your increase though. Ours is worldwide so EU prices not really relevant.
EU prices ay not be really relevant but US dollars are likely to be and currently the £ ain't doing so well against the dollar. A major reason for diesel prices heading over the £1.90 mark is that oil is paid for in dollars so keep an eye on your next renewal . . . .

Bill it’s actually Nationwide flex plus account, European breakdown insurance, travel insurance and mobile phone insurance for £13 per month providing you have no health issues. You just open and account and they will take £13 every month.
At the moment you can switch to one and get £200 cash back
We have flexplus but its 30 days max trip, just paid £70 to extend it to 60 day trip.
