2021 EHIC - Check Your Eligibility via NHS Site

It is my understanding that the ethic card is still valid after 31/12/20 if you are still abroad at that date and will only expire when you return to the uk or move to another county. Obviously the 90day rule would also kick in from 1/1/21

That is confirmed on this site.

Visits to the EU that start in 2020 and end in 2021

If you're visiting an EU country over the Christmas and New Year period, your UK EHIC entitlements will continue until you leave that country to either:

return to the UK
visit another EU country

My late father-in-law worked for a health insurance company for 40 years and paid extra for the family. As he lay dying from a heart attack he received a letter cancelling the insurance, luckily the NHS looked after the family.

Folks as with any link, always always look it up yourself.

This is the link to the EHIC card from the UK gov site you can check yourselves.

Just saying its different is all.

So if I go to Spain for Christmas and New Year, then in January go to Morocco, then in April return tinSpain, and back to the UK in July, I am covered by the EHIC until July? I do not believe that, but it is what the site's statement implies. When I leave Spain for Morocco, I am not doing either of

  • return to the UK
  • visit another EU country

lif you arrive in France in December then are in spain before 31/12/20 are you still covered ?

Yes you are.it’s which country you are in on 1/1/21 as soon as you leave that country your ehic card is no longer valid. So if you are in Spain on 31/12/20 it’s valid but as soon as you leave to either France/Portugal/UK etc it ends.

I think it's very clear when looking at the examples. 🙂

Obviously designed for air travel, so best have travel insurance unless your in a country that your crossing is going from, so ferry from Spain if in Spain, or France if you go straight home. 😁 Bob.
