Van conversion

Anyone have any knowledge of converting a g9t 2.2 to 2.5 apparently they are the same block head etc different bore etc. But with same turbo ECU etc.

According to vauxhall owners club members it's possible. waiting to become a member.

I have had the van off the road for 3 months due to issues with the engine and garage covid etc.

Cheers James

It may very well be all the same, with the same model ECU, but likely running a different map in the software to account for different fueling and timing. If I was going to take on such a conversion, I would buy a complete donor vehicle, with matching ECU pump and other essential parts. Anything left over is then sold to cover some of the cost

I doubt the block would be the same internally, so might not be able to bore it enough for bigger pistons

looks like its bigger bore and longer stroke so you would need crank and rods as well, better to get a complete 2.5 and fit that I would have thought

I was thinking the whole engine.

Not including auxillary parts obviously but if I could get one with everything in place that would save me / garage time.

I have a master with 2.5, which I'm afraid that's all I know about, and as far as I can tell it's a different gearbox and loads of other things, when I have looked for spares there isn't much that's the same.

Thanks I'll check with French auto specialist tomorrow.

Cheers James

Presumably the 2.5 has a different state of tune otherwise it would be hardly worth increasing the capacity for the sake of just an extra 300cc........ or do have to replace the engine and you already have a 2.5 engine available?

The reason is that the 2.2 is rare only 2 years approx and has issues which were sorted somewhat when they reverted to 2.5.

Finding another 2.2 will be hard as they are always being replaced n and the 2.5 is common.

Slight update the French specialist suggests that a crankshaft breather pipe us blocked and so that is forcing oil out of the seals - plausible??

Yes, that could happen, but you haven't actually said in any post what the problem is with the engine!

Hi sorry that's because I'm not actually sure!

Pushing out oil.

Renault specialist suggested it's possibly a breather pipe that's blocked.

It's in the garage do my hands are rather tied. He's going to hopefully try and sort it today...

I'm in Shipley north of Bradford.

Where is the oil appearing? The oil filler cap? Somewhere at the side of the cylinder block? Underneath in the sump area?

Update I went to the garage and a week later they don't seem to be making any progress at all two engines in the floor.

I think they have lost interested in it.

What are my options?

Perhaps I should cut my losses??

Sell it as is...?

Update they have the. Engine in. But they cannot get it running due to the diesel pump fitted not in timing with the firing sequence? So diesel expert coming to sort Friday.....

Cheers James

I refer to my earlier post, the ECU needs a different map for the 2.5 compared to the 2.2

Hi

It's a 2.2 straight swap. So ECU same.

I was contemplating the 2.5 but they have been able to put the S/h 2.2 I got back in with new breather filter.

Fingers crossed!

Sounds to me like your first mistake, and a big one at that, was taking it to that garage.
If a trained mechanic can't set up timing for a diesel pump he must have got his certificate in a cornflake packet.

If it has an ECU and a common injector rail there is no sequence, its taken care of by the ECU.

I agree but hindsight is 20/20!

Hopefully it will be running by tomorrow night!!

Hi

Went and picked up the van he says the engine is us?!!

It's running like a bag of nails!!

Running poorly, breathing via the oil cap.

will go back to my normal garage for a 2nd opinion.

Might start looking for a new van!

Cheers James

So update 4/5......

Took to garage as above ...

He agreed didn't sound good.

Noticed the wires are a mess in the fuse box. Also leaking oil.

Brakes were dodgy too.

He went to get it pre mot but they didn't finish it due to the oil.

However in the way home I took a longer route round the moor and thrashed it up to 50mph for about 10mins. This had the effect of getting rid of the bag of nails sound and the brakes were better v odd???

So I've got an oil leak from the crankcase seal I thing just above the power steering pump, wiring that needs a sort out, sounds more do able???

Also smells of mold in the back what the best way to get rid of it?

Cheers James

A match...

3rd garage this morning who said it was a cam chain casting leak. They couldn't fix it.

Perhaps a loose chain had worn through the sky casting?

Looks like end if the road. Poor thing as it's running really quite well!

They may have broken casting whist fitting. Why could they not fix it?

They said they had done as much as they could with it.

2 other garages won't touch it.

Thinking of trading in for a pug boxer etc.

Cheers James
