10 Year LPG bottle/tank information

That’s very unlike Gas Safe as they normally don’t commit to any definitive answer (in fact it seems almost impossible to get a definitive answer from anyone in the gas industry)
But I would say that your particular question is easily answered and in GSIUR where it defines what is classed as work .
DIY and favours for friends etc are all deemed as work and therefore you would still need to prove competency ( how do you prove competency without all the relevant qualifications) ?

Here lies the problem with a lot of woolly regulations. I used to deem myself as competent with gas, I used to labour for a gas fitter and knew what I was doing. I can quite happily sort out my own house and I am doing nothing illegal. The regulations do not say you must hold xyz qualification.

Until it goes bang and my competency is called into question. It’s usually then the courts who will decide if I was competent or not, which is a bit pointless as clearly, if it went bang, I wasn’t…..

Is the suggestion here that the gas bottles must be replaced after 10 years or re-certified. If the latter, what tests are carried out on the bottles to re-certify them (for another 10 years?)
Hello Liz. Just open up the link on #1 on this thread - that will answer your question.
BTW all bottles/tanks are subject to this requirement, not just Gas-It equipment.

I don't get the amount of people trying to find an excuse not to replace their cylinders/bottles at 10 years. For Christ's sake you are sleeping on top of a potential bomb surely you want to be safe. It's not just the cylinders the valves have a 10 year life.

For the sake of your our safety why not just change the rudy things rather than risk your own life, why spend hours arguing why you shouldn't, anyone who thinks like that must be bonkers.

Our Alugas cylinders were in pristine condition looked like new as the two vans they were in had internal gas lockers accessed from inside the garage.
I still replaced them at 10 years, there is no argument not to.

You also get the ones that bury their head in the sand, a few times on the forum I have suggested to people who have bought a used van with refillable cylinder or an underslung tank they check the age as it may need replacing. They appear to ignore my post and don't even have courtesy to reply.
I don't get it, it's the most dangerous item in the van.
Your saying why not just change the ruddy things, have you seen the price of a new underslung tank fitted, cost is a big factor, £1000 plus, probably someone could say to you, why don’t you just pay £40 a night campsite fee, instead you pay nowt or next to nothing.
It sounds like it’s not unlawful to have a tank over 10 years old but there can be implications for the outlet that allows you to fill it.

I’m going to take ours into fill and then the retailer can post” Have you seen this lovely condition 7 year old tank that’s just come in” you don’t seem to get posts like that only the crap condition ones that come in.

You won't win with Lenny...he's on a mission. Obviously he has the money to replace stuff when he feels the need. Some of us just can't.
You're better off leaving it. Do as the majority do..top up and wait for jesus to come knocking with his bomb wand! I'm more likely to look like a withered current before I change my tank I'm sure. 🤔😉

That's very unfair, safety should come before anything else regardless of 'wealth', if your tyres were 10 years old would you still keep using them because they looked okay?

If Lenny's on a mission then I'm with Lenny and many others are too. I've been in a MH when there was a gas leak with the ensuing 5ft blowtorch and it's bl**dy scary!

As stated... its a personal choice and like Lenny stated in a previous post directed at me personally....i too stand by it. The majority on here simply agree that' is just not practical at all.
If you or lenny fancy donating to a fund to help us poor underslung tank owners a chance to swap their outdated tanks...I'm all for it.
Seriously though this is a thread that needs an end to it. Individuals should take it on themselves to sort something out and I'm sure you would agree yes?
Until dealers who sell motorhomes that have a due date tank fitted replaces it/them.. I honestly think this won't be solved . You must agree to that I am sure.
It's an opinion that is all.
