Swift Kontiki 884
Exp
Since 2017
Hi funsters, I have just put my 12 month old Kontiki 884 in for hab check and the floor behind the driver seat has 41-42% readings. I get to know more when I speak to the engineer tomorrow but where do you go with this, are we talking replacing the floor? And if so is this done at the factory.

obviously this has left the factory without being sealed correctly. I am dreading this as I I don’t want to be fobbed off.

Just stand your ground. Its damp im sure you have a warranty so get on to your dealership. Keep all documentation get everything emailed for evidence.
Correct it’s under warranty, I just don’t want it drying out and telling me it’s fine, there has to be a reason, lack of sealant or whatever.

Good luck with your repairs.
I wonder what the damp readings were on Thor Heyerdahl's Kon-Tiki, might have been a bit less seeing as Swift didn't have a hand in building it ?

It sounds like connection between the cab and habitation is a Friday job. As Simon Meadwell says, keep plenty of notes and pictures. Get the dealer to put it in writing that there is a fault and it is under warranty. Ask when it can be resolved and make clear that you do not expect to pay £X on a new motorhome and have it unusable in winter because the weather will get in and make things worse.
If Swift cannot put forward a reasonable repair schedule as if a recommended workshop can do it like Crossley Coachcraft.
Good luck.

In that position more than likely to be a push fit plastic plumbing coupling come loose. These are notorious for vibration leaks. See if you can access the underfloor from a nearby hatch to inspect the damage. Hope the damage is superficial and easily repairable.

It’s not doubly floor but there is water pipes under that locker

If it's 42% there will be a pool of water, you'd physically see it and the ply floor covering under the lino would ooze water.

That was the old reputation but the bloody things dont contain wood now, they are built composite so the crap you are fed from the company is that they can’t get damp

Insist on back to factory!

I think that with all their advertising regarding no wood in the coachwork, that must be true. Persistant damp, even if it is not causing wood rot can still become smelly and destructive to other fabrics in the van. However a cool head when dealing with Swift and your dealer, knowing they must respond, could be more effective than the screaming frustration you no doubt feel.

UPDATE: The dealer has confirmed no parts are needed but the repair work will be

Remove lino, dry and treat the floor
Remove and reseal, water and electric points
Clean and reseal under the van.

The told me it was ready for collection and the repair is booked in for September 24!!!

I said this is not acceptable as damage has occurred in the first 12 months. They are now carrying out temp repairs so I can collect the unit. I have asked for an alternate repairer, no answer as yet, and told them I want 3 monthly checks until the repair is completed.

I have a good damp meter so I can monitor this, but 12 months before its repairs sounds crazy, should I be contacting Swift or Consumer advice or someone else?

Well, I had a damp in the wall of my Burstner (probably from the TV oulet point or the water filler point) and the dealer said it would be a massive job as once damp gets in it cannot get out. Involved butting a section out from the inside and repairing. Not sure how true that was as it was done under warranty by a different dealer and it was completed very quickly and involved 'drying it out'. Who knows? i can only take their word for it that is is fixed.

Why Sept 24 - they cannot be booked up until then. There must be another reason. Obtaining parts?

There is no way i would wait or be expected to wait a year for a damp repair, that's absolutely shocking it really is. I know about damp as i have a major one recently that caused no end of stress and grief. Don't let them get away with that as the vehicle is so new i would be looking at some legal advice on the best way to proceed

The whole motorhome industry needs a major shake up.
1)You spend a fortune on a new motorhome.
2)You then have to pay someone every year to check if your expensive vehicle has/hasn't leaked.
3)If it has, you have to wait months for it to be fixed.
4)If it hasn't, there is always next year.
When you spend £70K plus on a new motorhome it should not leak.
You should also not have to pay someone every year to check if it has.
As a bare minimum, the annual damp check should be free for at least the first five years.

Absolutely right. It's disgraceful. Having to expect construction faults on new m/h's has almost become the norm.
Thank goodness I've never had the joints equally expensive GRP cruising yachts leak. If yacht builders can do it there's no excuse for having to suffer it with motorhomes.

That’s a good point

I suspect £70k is a low estimate for the van in question! Just looked probably between 90 and 120k!!

That date must be a mistake surely , next Tuesday 24th October is hopefully what they meant , a years wait for damp repairs is a scandal if correct
Have they actually written this date down or was it word of mouth?

We are not back to Leaky Kontiki again are we? Didn't they have enough trouble last time?
If nobody at Swift sees this information going out to around 60,000 motorhomers and not responding, they must be dafter than I imagined.
