£25 fine for driving on the grass !

Speaking from my experience with Barclays it is the provider of your card services who decides what you can and can’t do. You can put whatever you like in your T&Cs but you can’t just hang onto their card details in case you want to charge them for something.

When we were in Derbyshire earlier this month the site owner said try not to drive on the grass understanding it hurtling down with snow and going dark. I did find the edge of the pitch first by walking before driving on to the pitch.

Just to clarify they can't fine you but they can raise an additional charge on you as part of the contract. Or maybe try "criminal damage" if they get the police involved.

Can't you just fill the ruts and let the wriggley wormies do the airating bit ?
You then have a light soil on top of a compressed soil end end up with a puddle. Next time someone hits it, it just makes the situation even worse. Once a tyre has slipped it fills the tread up with mud, and then they slip and slide over more grass before getting off (if they are lucky),

So are you saying that the touring park do not now let any of the grass pitches be used, and restrict everyone to the hardstanding ones? - cos I don't think its possible to get on a grass pitch without driving on grass, is it?

I worked on a holiday park a few years ago which had statics on grass so cars used to park on the grass beside them, ok when it was dry. There was a carpark I must add only a minutes walk from the statics. When it had been raining they would still park on the grass and it would get a right mess, all rutted up. The boss told me one day to go and sort the rugs out, tidy it up. I refused saying if I tidy it up they will park on there again and rut it up again and I will have to go back yet again. If I leave it all rutted up they will see it and will not go on it. 👍

I think the rule is there for several reasons.

  • It makes people aware that they need to be careful
  • It makes people think about what they are going to do
  • it stops the dickheads that can’t drive properly trying to get onto their pitch by taking a shortcut across the grass “I don’t like reversing ( read ‘I can’t drive’ ) as they’re stuck on a decorative grass area between two hardstandings
  • And if someone does damage the grass accidentally, they’ll try and repair it! For fear of being out of pocket.
The last point, often if the grass is pushed back into shape by hand or foot at the time the damage is considerably less, certainly less obvious. Wheel ruts left for a few days, especially sunny dry days before the wardens notice dry out into peaks and troughs which as Jim said are a pain to deal with

We don’t have anything like that on our T & C‘s but it’s idea and worth considering

The info ……
It’s a very polite notice! Even with a large caravan on the back, it’s perfectly doable, given enough road width… 👍

I use the Ludlow Park regularly and I once saw a Range Rover and 4 wheel Caravan get straight on the tent camping grass and then straight back onto his hard standing 🤬 As the warden said that is two pitches that tents can’t use for a year, if you can’t consider other people and other peoples property, go away. Ludlow is a 5 star site but will only stay that way if people respect it.

Not sure it helps calling people dickheads, ( don’t be Dickist) , theres newbies out there and people who cant reverse a caravan / motorhome properly because they are still learning / new to our hobby/lifestyle.
Hopefully the warning is sent to people before they arrive and churn the place up, the message sounds reasonable and has an enforcement angle , I assume supported by signage.
I do get fed up sometimes with the quantity of negative signs (especially on cmc , ‘no enjoying yourself or breathing in this area whatsoever’ ) .
The offer to help is great, theres more than enough ‘experts’ ready to pitch in when you turn up at a site.

If people endanger other road users lives, driving something that they either can't control properly or have had the necessary training to be responsible for, arrive at our site and damage our property and equipment, they are dickheads.

For too long common sense has been gagged for fear of "offending" people

Up to now managed to avoid pitching on grass. Hope it continues.
Nice for walking on though.

If I am allocated a grass pitch I ask the wardens if it is firm enough to take the weight of the PVC.

If I end up making ruts that's their responsibility. So far, no problems.

When I retired in my 50's, 16 years ago the Mercedes-Benz Franchise was Charging £117.50 per hour, plus 17.5% vat in Ipswich, Suffolk.
I would say a Campsite charging £25 for a grass repair is more than reasonable , better still a fine of a £100 , running a business is not a charity .

Having spent 30+years dealing with caravanners in particular, I’m well aware of their shortcomings! Lasses towing horse trailers put many to shame….
BUT, there’s no excuse! The C&MC have training courses, not to mention the B+E trainers that now have little work! It’s never been easier to get training…..and, you don’t ‘fail’!

Arrogance and attitude is something else though. 😡🤬

Training is never wasted. My blue light trailer course was fun though. Towing on blues is very difficult the concentration required is difficult to maintain without practice. luckily it wasn't a commentated blue light drive.
