Had a look and couldn’t see an answer to this question, In the UK you are often asked at supermarkets check outs if you would like
some cash back, just wondering if it’s similar in Europe?
if it was it would alleviate a lot of trips to a cashpoint and circumnavigate ATM withdrawals limits by some card suppliers,

Don't know but even if it was I imagine exchange rate would be awful
That would depend on you method of payment, same as for the groceries.
Maybe a credit card wouldn't work and a debit card often charges exchange fees so a bad deal. I normally use a Revolut card for good exchange rates but unsure if you could use it for Cashback ?

I think we must be the odd ones out.

When travelling in Euroland we usually take about about 200-300 euro with us, ' just in case'. Normally return home with most or all of it.

Just use net-rate credit cards for expenditure abroad. Don't ever recall needing to withdraw cash.

We rarely use cash at home either.

Why?
It would be the same rate your card normally gives you, we use Metro Bank when traveling, I get the same rate as I do on my Halifax Clarity & Revolut cards.
But I've never seen anyone get cash back in France or any other country.

Most stuff done on my Halifax Clarity card. Used about €300 in the paper stuff over the course of a month on a couple of the meals out and other odd bits and pieces. Still have €1K from when I bought some Euros pre pandemic when the rate was good. Should do me for a couple more years.

I’ve stayed in Spain for 3 months and have never needed more the €200 over 3 months…? Everywhere takes card…. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Oops...I've seen the alert, had a quick look but having in my arms a baby giving me a sample of his voice's capacity right in my ear, I thought I would wait for some quieter time to answer...then...I forgot!
Errrr sowy!! 😌
No, they will never offer you cash .
The only time I was "offer" cash, was in a small village with no cash point at all. But in fact I had to pay my bill first and then with another card machine They typed the wanted sum ➕ 10 cents every 10 euros . I guess it was linked to their bank and somehow they were the cash point.

Other than that, never ever!! 😯

Used to be able to do it when we lived in Germany but only with a German bank card. Germany was a big user of cash and credit cards were pretty much not used until 20-25 years ago. Having said that Covid has changed things. We noticed a move to cards last time we were there Easter 2022. Lot of smaller restaurants still only take cash though.

Not in Germany from our experience. Over £400 spend in touristy area in an outdoor clothing shop. No cards taken. Cash only.

I think cashback started here when the banks started charging the shops to pay in cash. The less cash in the till the less bank charges to pay. I doubt it was for the benefit of customers, though they may have benefited as a side effect.

What is this thing called 'cash'? Just got back from 3 weeks in France. Didn't use any.

In France and Spain I use cash for a cup of coffee or a 🍺 but anything more like a meal always card. Last time I was in Germany there was a lot of cash used.

They soon get the card machine out when you say you have no cash…😎
I've never had that happen. On the rare occasion I've not had enough cash they usually direct me to the nearest cash machine and trust me to come back. A few places have said bring it in the morning!

Was in Netherlands May & June, uk debit cards treated as credit cards and 90% won’t accept our debit or credit cards, cash is king.
Same period Germany France n Luxembourg, no problems.

Just returned from Portugal and notice most people in shops now using credit cards. Looking forward to next trip to France to see if cheques are dying out.
