Found this tool.

Can’t understand what exactly it is for, and I’m sure it’s been designed for a specific job.

Squeezing the handles and the jaws open
No grip inside the jaws, but there is on the outside of them, and a dimple on each one.
Each jaw also tapers giving a hook to the end.
Two holes in the handle. Not sure if this is for any purpose. Can’t see a spring working as handles close.

No. Not normal circlip pliers, as they have points on the tips. These are very flat and very square.

I’ve got many sets of them.

Ahhh. I’ve now found out what they are 👍🏻

Pray tell?
I thought I’d let other guess for a while, but the guesses above aren’t far off, similar sort of job.

They are made by Caterpillar and are “External retaining ring pliers” what I would call “external snap ring”. And they should have a spring in the two handle holes.

We used something similar for fitting piston rings
That was my first thought when seeing them. But as usual I was too late to the party :) (y)

I have a similar set that I was looking at the other day.
I was thinking they have not been used in years and are in very good nick.
Was going to give them to my friends son who is still on the tools.
For once I hadn't got around to doing anything about handing them over
Last week I bought an old Honda mower of flea bay which needed some attention to the drive which had some circlips to remove.
I still had the pliers
I'm sure I could have had a loan of them back.

I have got rid of most of the stuff I had for Austin Mini's though. I'm never going to touch those evil little things again.
