Hosepipe ban and motorhomes

Definitely not. Been tried many times. Always failed. You pay for the supply. Not what you use it for.

If you pay by means of how much your house is worth then there would be a reasonable expectation on how much water you would use.
Also how you would move said amount from one point to another.

You could always put an mdpe pipe from the house to the bottom of the garden and just leave the tap on at the garden end.

I think you are allowed to water freshly laid lawn.
I’ve not seen a minimum size for said lawn 🤔

I’d like to know when water companies started charging for removing water from outside private houses 🤔

Isn’t that an act of god raining on the highway??

But we are being told what we can and can’t use it for.

ie no car washing etc

yorkshire water, robbing barstewards,, take over £90 a month from me, then want to tell me how to use it. they can shove the hose pipe ban where the sun don't shine.
Flipping heck, how much do you use! We're only charged £17 a month!

Im charged £14pm, but that came about as a water company hardship benefit when i was on long term sick benefit. Should be over £400 pa and doesnt include sewerage
We have a septic tank for toilet and run-off water.

You are only being told what you can't use a hosepipe for. I kind of understand where you are coming from but the water companies don't make the laws. Like I said it's the government.

We tend to focus more on the spirit of the legislation. Sadly law is needed to enforce that. At the end of the day, if it doesn't rain there is no water. If people think it's more important to sprinkle their lawns thats disappointing.

Chricky, ours is £38 a month and according to the bills we use just under the average for a two person household. That’s with Northumbrian Water. So it seems there is quite a variance, like council tax too. 😳😳

I think the problem the water companies have is they haven’t invested in the infrastructure.

Paid out bonuses to share holders and bosses.

Put up what we pay out for a poor service.

So generally taken the p**s

I suppose it depends on how frugal you are, I use water butts to water garden plants, don't flush the loo unnecessarily (ie yellow=let it mellow, brown=flush it down), we aren't the type that takes showers daily, and don't waste water letting taps run, tending to wipe pots down rather than rinsing them off, other water saving things too, so our use is very low. Not quite a frugal as when in the MH, ie don't do the MH hokey-cokey shower routine, but no need to use the water just because it's 'on tap'.

I'm on a meter and pay £7.50pm for the supply. Southern Water, on the other hand charge me for 'waste water' which is based on my metered consumption. Last month it more than doubled to £34pm.(to cover investment in infrastructure!!!)

Thames Water didn’t allow this last time. My Mum checked with them to see if she could fill her motorhome’s tank as she was about to go away in it and they said no, she couldn’t use her hose to fill it. When she said she was filling the van with water that she then wouldn’t be using at home, they still said no.
So, sadly, it’s not safe to assume that because Yorkshire Water have some sense, other water companies will do, too.
It would be great if TW would amend their view on this though!
Well hurrah, this time TW have stated that the use of hoses to fill MH tanks is permitted, when their Temporary Usage Ban comes in from 22nd.

It hasn't had much rainfall this year though.

Do we though? I reckon it would take at least 20 years to get planning permission for a reservoir. Very bad for the environment.
I moved to Abingdon in 1976 just when they stated to talk about a reservoir in the Steventon area, I was seriously happy...new place to go sailing....still arguing about it 50 years later. Twenty years would have been great.

What the water companies can ban with a temporary hosepipe ban is laid down in the Water Industry Act 1991, Section 76. It does not say that filling motorhome tanks for domestic purposes can be banned.

The circumstances in which the use of a hosepipe can be banned are laid out abov, courtesy of Pausim 👍

They are pretty prescriptive.

So the way I read that is that subsection f) is the only relevant part that might impact motorhome travel.
  1. drawing water, using a hosepipe, for domestic recreational use;
Bottom line appears to be that if the purpose of your trip is leisure, then it is likely to be construed as domestic recreational use.

However, if the purpose of your trip/use is ….. say .. residential, business or visiting sick relatives miles away etc etc, then it’s not recreational, and the water company cannot ban your use of a hose pipe??

Thoughts??

It's always been permitted. Like I said earlier. TW don't get to decide what you can and can't do. It's enshrined in legislation.

I got it when you said it the first time. 🙄
But that doesn’t change the fact that when asked specifically about this matter last time, someone at Thames Water SAID to their customer, multiple times and adamantly, that it wasn’t allowed.

There, now we’ve both repeated ourselves, to the boredom of others on the thread…

It will be illegal to use your hosepipe to fill your van at home as using a hosepipe will be illegal by means of plugging it in. Campsites will come under some commercial rule so effected differently as per car washes (initially)

However, you could fill it with saucepans, watering cans, bottles, or a sieve spilling it as you do so...

That's the beauty of bonkers bat shit Britain 🇬🇧
The only thing that is illegal is watering the garden lawns filling swimming pools and paddling pools.
Filling spas and chooses
Toping up garden ponds is permitted as well as wildlife ponds.
Birdbaths and anything that helps wildlife and animals welfare.
Anything that sustained human life and wellbeing.
That includes the caravan or motorhome that requires water for life support and personal hygiene

Like everything in life, we can all break the law continuously and we all do……

It’s the getting caught that’s the problem….

Live somewhere where you have no neighbours to grass you up and you can get away with anything…😎

Speaking as a Water Industry Manager and having dealt with Hosepipe Bans for many years, I couldn't really give a toss what people do with hosepipes. The main driver is don't waste water. Demand usually drops by 25% on day 1. They work. We get lots of silly queries and lots of reports of people ignoring the ban.

When people blatantly ignore the ban we give them a yellow card (a pre prepared warning card through the letter box). That does the trick 99/100. Odd ones carry on and these get passed to the police. A visit from them usually sorts it.

The real killer is sprinklers. They use masses of water. People are so stupid and think their lawns need water to survive. They don't.

Also don't forget the main reason that Water companies put hosepipe bans on is its the first step on the road for applying for drought orders (e.g. taking more water from Rivers and damaging the environment).

Something of an irony. I went out to fill up my campervan with water this morning - first time I've used a hose for months, only to discover that my underslung water tank has been holed since it was last used. The leak is right on the bottom corner, so the tank won't hold any water for any length of time I noticed it mid morning, and the driveway is now dry. I could probably fix it with some gorilla tape, temporarily at least, assuming the hole is just that - a hole - which it does look like, rather than a split, but I can't reach as it's pretty much in the middle of the van. What a pain!

Oh well, I always carry a 10l on board container anyway, so I've added some more water to the load. It's not like I need 60l for four nights away anyway, but I would've liked to be able to use the leisure shower, and also the water heater. Never mind, I camp all winter without using the underslung tank so this is more of an annoyance than a major issue. Just a bit annoying right on the back of a big bill due to having the exhaust manifold & turbo gaskets replaced this week!

So it's not just the water companies that have leaks 🤣
