Just pricing up our summer hols trip for last two weeks of June 2025. We're heading to Il der Re again. We are taking our 6.95m long MoHo, Kathryn's Toad, (an Aygo), and two dogs.
Newhaven-Dieppe including 20% over 60's discount ( a note on how to get this in a moment) sailing on Friday night at 11pm c/w interior cabin, and back mid morning Sunday a fortnight later, £460 return.
Le Shuttle, no discount, same rig, embark 9ish Saturday morning, return 10ish Sunday morning a fortnight later..... wait for it..... wait for it..... a mind blowing £777!!
Le Shuttle is 69% more expensive!! Other disadvantages, it's a total pain in the Arras processing the dogs through passport control, you've got to be on site 2 hours before you embark, & there are often delays. The ferry process is so much more friendly, the passport check lady passes a microchip finder wand through your driver's window to wave over the dog, she smiles at you and is generally pleasant, the other staff at the terminal are the same, nothing seems to be too much trouble.
To get discount on the Newhaven - Dieppe ferry. Go on to the DFDS website and put in all your details. (Don't use any of these ferry finder websites, they are ultimately more expensive.) Note how much it is, then YOU MUST RING THE HELP LINE and organise your booking via them, most helpful, you may need to email them proof of age, a passport, a driver's license, that kind of thing, and it doesn't matter if you're a decrepit 60 and the missus is a nubile 18 year old (sorry girls!) you'll be eligible for the discount. Once you qualify and get them to save you as an account holder you are set to receive the discount every time you travel until you croak!
On the ferry the dogs cost £20 each, each way and you don't get discount for them, so a total of £80. The toad goes as a trailer and is £70ish each way (but subject to 20% so £56) so if you were going with just you, the memsahib, and your MoHo it would cost you about £268. TOTAL. Le Shuttle starts at £300ish... one way.
And you will save about 100 miles worth of fuel if your heading south or west of Paris.
No contest really.
