CMC attitude to Wild Camping

You could think that, I have nothing to prove or disprove,

I didn’t think it was a difficult question but you seem determined to be obstructive. Hey ho. 🤷‍♂️

Just when you think it can’t get any worse….. learned today that CMC are redeveloping Steamer Quay Club site in Totnes. For those of you who know it, it’s in a great location (by the river and interesting town). Unlike most CMC sites, it’s exclusively non-EHU and has been for years. However, given its enduring popularity that obviously doesn’t put most folks off who enjoy the cheaper site fees in lieu of electrickery. So, in the teeth of an energy crisis and global warming what ‘improvements’ do the CMC intend to make? What else but serviced pitches?! Further evidence if it was needed that they've got their head so far up their arses they really have lost the plot!

Perhaps that’s what people want

Even if that were true, I doubt they’d know it. However, it’s a great way of restricting choice and diversity, hiking prices and ignoring their environmental responsibilities.

Excellent news for those who may like a longer stay, on occasions we book a fully serviced pitch, it just means we don't have to go back and forth to the service point. Plus the serviced pitch is mainly booked by Caravans and totally get why they do this.

It's also great to see CAMC investing upgrading and modernise a site all of which is not cheap to do, it will be interesting to see if the electric points are metered which is one of the things the Club say they will be doing if so people can pay or not as the case may be. What's not to like.

"Steamer Quay Club Campsite is due to undergo a full redevelopment.

Economy pitches will be converted to 46 new non-awning serviced pitches, while the work will also see new motor van waste points, new service points, a new electric vehicle charging point and a refurbishment of the toilet block. The campsite is currently closed and is expected to reopen during summer 2023 (subject to planning permission, therefore exact details and dates are subject to change)."

But I do understand that for those who may have taken advantage of the budget pitches these won't be available which is a shame.

We love this site. Fully serviced just means a bloody big price hike. What’s wrong with walking a few metres to empty your waste and fill up. We used to have a caravan and often stayed there, it’s such a small site and hardly justifies going fully serviced. Who are all these people wanting change. Been a member for donkeys years, and have never been canvassed for our opinions. Rant over…..

It’s probably market demand, not saying it’s right or wrong but if the club makes more money to refurbish sites then why wouldn’t any business do so?

Prices would soon drop if there was no demand and investment within a site wouldn’t happen

Because it’s primary aim isn’t simply to make loads of money but to represent the interests of caravanners and motorhomers. Providing facilities for someone to sit in their awning heating up the atmosphere, umbilically connected to a service point because they’re too idle to walk 10 yards to a tap or drain while inflating the costs of my hobby isn’t representing my interests!

if they were just trying to make money they wouldn’t be investing in the site, they would sweat the asset. 😉

Should add no one will be sitting in an awning CAMC stated “Economy pitches will be converted to 46 new non-awning serviced pitches”

In other words, the pitches will be closer together so not enough space for an awning.
