49,385 - 5 made this afternoon = 49,380
I’ve got into the pattern from Janine now but the nice red wool is dwindling I have some more but the quality isn’t as good

I think I was misreading Janines pattern cos I had spaces left on my first attempt but I've worked it out for myself now (I think!) Or I'm doing it totally wrong but they look Okayish to me.

49344 another 19 =

49325

======

That’s 52 in total I’ve done so far. Can’t believe I’ve managed to do that many between all of my other projects :D2

Do we know what's going to happen with the poppies ( I may have missed this previously, if so sorry). I'm planning on doing them during our summer away, many hours of travelling should see a few made  and if we get the weather we had at times last year (we're going to try Norway again) then a few more will be made.

I'm not sure exactly other than we are certainly going to have an impact somewhere on Remembrance week ... @Puddleduck is sorting something out at a memorial .. I have envisaged a sort of flowing poppies like at the Tower of London .. but I don't know ... perhaps Helen could explain better to us .. the thread is so long now.

I know that the purple poppies represent the animals killed in the wars ... eg as per war horses in the trenches.

In our little village we are hoping to drape our memorial in camouflage netting with poppies sewn on which will cover the cairn but not the inscription. Depending on the number of poppies and how the draping works it might cover the blank 3 sides or may drape round one side of the inscription (not obscuring it) and pool around the base of the memorial. We also have King (the horse) and are hoping to have the figure of a man made of wire and poppies as well but that is proving more difficult and may have to be abandoned.

Official colours of poppies are red, white, black and purple but we are not getting obsessive about that. Red is the usual British Legion poppy, the one we are all familiar with. The white poppy is the international poppy for peace and remembrance and commemorates all affected by war and conflict. The purple poppy (as @movan said) is for animals killed and injured in war (not just horses but also pigeons, dogs and so on) and the black poppy is for people of colour caught up in conflict past and present.

The poppy is

  • A symbol of Remembrance and hope
  • Worn by millions of people
  • Red because of the natural colour of field poppies
The poppy is NOT

  • A symbol of death or a sign of support for war
  • A reflection of politics or religion
  • Red to reflect the colour of blood

I will be cheating a little at the weekend if all goes as planned as @The Happy Hooker and I are planning a raid on a fabric / craft warehouse and they may have some ready made poppies which they sell as trimming but I will be buying some cheap felt which makes up into poppies very quickly..... and even faster if I use the sewing machine once the quilts are done!

Dont know if this is any use?
Bonding squares for premature babies.

@Theonlysue That is an interesting site which also took me onto Pinterest and some lovely things to make. How do you get patterns from Pinterest - I have tried before but it seems to want to take over my computer and I'm a little afraid of something happening I cannot put right.

I don't know as i dont subscribe to it yet.

Having been doing poppies from @Janine ’s pattern I have decided that my throw with the ALDI wool will be made from, the same pattern I have been experimenting with different squares and come to the decision that I like the poppy shape I just need to work out how the attatch them to each other. Any ideas girls??

Maybe do Granny Squares and attach the poppies to the centre of each square? You could do green on cream and then cream on green. Otherwise you will have to try to add to the poppies to make squares.
