Hi, I hope that I am in the right area for this, my first venture. I am increasing my leisure batteries and have been told that I should increase the output of my alternator by swapping it to 180amp output model to be able to charge the larger capacity.
My motorhome is a 2006 Fiat Ducato 2.3 diesel Ci Carioca 656. My hope is that someone will have practical knowledge to impart to me.
My thanks in advance….Chris

What is the output of your current Alternator?
To get a higher charge rate to the batteries you would need to fit a B2B. You would only need to uprate the alternator if you were fitting a high power B2B, a 30 or even a 40 amp B2B should be OK with the standard alternator.

Thank you Lenny HB, I will need to check what the original output is, I know that it is the standard original alternator for the vehicle.
I am led to believe that I will need to swap it for another. I am contemplating tackling this and am looking for any insight as to any pitfalls etc. (to be avoided if possible). Again many thanks

You could fit a 180a alternator but unless you also install larger split charge wiring it still won't give much more power.
Once the engine battery is fully charged the alternator output will reduce to next to nothing.
A B2B charger is the most efficient way to charge the leisure battery.
It fools the alternator into seeing the engine battery needing charge so ups the output which ends up at the leisure battery.

How much leisure battery are you putting in? this and how long you usually drive for will dictate how much power you need from the alternator.

I agree with Lenny HB because he advised my to fit a B2B and my word he was right...the charge I get on a short to medium drive charges my leisure battery..
