I once had a Dutch Guy at my door asking what we were cooking, as it smelt delicious.
was a sweet and sour stir fry, very easy with vinegar and honey plus tomato purée.
he did sample a bit!

This one needs an oven to be properly cooked
Yes,but it’s in one pot is it not? Enjoyed many versions when we had a wee house in Miraval Cabardes and use to go to Castelnaudry for the best

Go and ask them! Write this down if you can't speak French and go and show them

"C'est quoi ce truc que vous cuisinez? Le nom du plat s'il vous plait! ça sent très bon!
Marquez le sur le papier , merci!"

You might get the name of the plat but getting their own recipe for it might be difficult. ;) ;)

We had a similar problem with Giorgio in Greece, who I have known for many years, but Basia who has a good nose for smells and ingredients, managed to tease a lot of a recipe out of him.

We are going back in a few weeks and she wants to try out her version on him to see what he thinks.

Or try
”Quelle est cette odeur? C'est enlever les décalcomanies de ma camionnette?”

cette odeur
Errrr.... Then try quel est ce parfum!? Odeur et parfum is a bit like sweating and perspiring

Unless you are really posh and ask : "Excusez moi très cher, quel est donc cette délicieuse brise odoriférante":eek:o_O... and do not forget to say it with the little finger up!;)

Oh come on he can write it down on here, I will translate it . The answer can also be.... "I made it up with left overs, or with what was left in the fridge"... We all do that, so might be more complicated. Having had the name of it, if a proper receipe, I could have helped

The main recipes cooked in one pot in France are : Boeuf Bourguignon; Ragoût de porc /agneau; Blanquette de veau these are the main ones but of course plenty different ones according to the region.
Bourguignon done with beef cheeks is one my favourites. Pot au Feu too.

Yep I agree, Beef Cheeks is the best choice for Bouguignon! Pot au feu is so simple and delicious at the same time. Probably the French people favorite dish on a winter sunday when all the family comes for lunch!

Had a lovely meal in Auxerre in April where the dish of the day was braised beef cheeks served with mash and green beans. Was truly yummy!
