Strange rusty window catch (1 Viewer)

Strange thing. One window catch keeps going rusty. 2019 carado. No others effected. No damp around the window. Anyone any ideas

The condensation has rusted the screws and in turn condensation has run across the screws and even the rubber / plastic surround is discoloured.

remove the Handle clean up the plastic then fit stainless steel screws .

If they stick to a magnet then there poor quality stainless steel.
most stainless still has a certain amount of iron in it .
quality screws have less iron in them.
marine screws stainless steel oneswould be the better option.

I would be surprised that the catch itself is made of steel/iron as this is the only material that rusts. Aluminium ones do exhibit corrosion with a white powder like surface. The rust is probably due to the screws not being stainless steel, which can rust believe it or not is subjected to heavy salt based substances. I would suggest that the screws be replaced but also check for damp in the walls around the catches which improbably what is the true fault.

That's the mystery. There is no damp. That's what I was worried about. If you look at the screw you can see that the bottom half is not rusty and that's the bit that goes onto the frame. It appears to be top down. However I have never seen any condensation and the other catches and screws are all perfect

Swap the screws for the ones on the other catch and see what happens

New stainless screws and a dab of clear nail varnish over them, there are varying degrees of *stainless* steel

You won’t see anything unless it’s colder outside than inside.
then by the time it’s warmed up there will be no visible signs.



like icy weather outside you have your central heating on full first thing in the morning and even with double glazing there is a chance the bottom one inch of the glass will be wet with condensation.
and hour later no trace of anything…..

I have basically the same van with no problems with rusting as said a screw change to stainless will solve your problem

I would say you have a water ingress problem and the screw is going into the damp wood frame around the window.

That was my worry but if you read my posts and look at the posts you will see why I am i thinking that may not the problem
1. I get no damp readings anywhere around the area. Nothing. No staining indicating previous ingress and no splits in the window rubber.
2. None of the other screws in the other catches which are close by are rusty.
3. The rust clearly is starting at the top and working down as the heads are the worst affected. There is no rust where the thread goes into the frame.

Always value your views Lenny HB but can you have a good read if you haven't already. If you are right I'll take the window and frame out and have a good look.
