Is there much danger of these devices rubbing on the wheel and damaging the leather?

When I used my Disklok I used an elasticated cover that you buy as an extra.

With the Milenco I now use I found it did push two small marks into the wheel padding which recovered. But as I use it in the same position each time it is fitted I made up some pads from foam and Gorilla tape to stop this. Milenco also supply some (expensive) pads to prevent this.

hacksaw blade and a small hammer, main body of mine was aluminium so cut part way through and one hit with hammer to break it open

Just reread your thread and originally thought you refering to the Disklok and not the Stop Lock

Avoid any of the bar through the steering wheel types, as they make it easier to break the steering lock. Seen it done!

For anyone interested these are the pads I mentioned earlier. Knocked up with bits of a redundant yoga mat and some wide gorilla tape. They stop the lock marking the wheel. Where it rests.
